CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team looks forward to hosting their first home opener this weekend against Lewis-Clark State College Friday (Feb. 16) before heading north to face Gonzaga on Sunday (Feb. 18). Both matches are at 11 a.m.
The LCSC match will be held at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse on the EWU Campus and are open and complimentary to the public.
"We are looking forward to taking what we learned from some of the matches this past weekend and putting it into practice again this coming weekend -- we see every match as an opportunity to develop and grow as a player," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "Our home opener is exciting and brings a different energy into the mix. The team is excited to compete on their home courts in Friday's match."
Eastern started the season strong with two back-to-back wins against Pacific Lutheran (7-0) and Seattle U (5-2). The Eagles just returned from a weekend on the road in Seattle, facing Alabama and No. 24 Washington. They fell to Alabama (1-6) and UW (0-7) to put them at a 2-2 mark overall before opening up conference play in March.
Stephanie Broussard and Rachel Swindell made the team proud last weekend with two hard-fought doubles matches against some top players. The duo won in their match against Alabama 7-6 (5) and returned the following day against Washington to win (6-2).
Lewis-Clark won their first match last weekend against Whitworth to put them at a 1-3 mark overall. Their eight-woman roster features five returners from the 2017 season.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are currently 3-2 overall after a successful weekend (Feb. 10) with a win against Idaho at home. The squad features a strong doubles duo in Ashleigh Jacobs and Nevada Apollo who clinched the doubles point against Idaho.
"It's always great to face Gonzaga. They are continuing to build as a program and so are we, so it's fun to play them every year as a way to see how well we are developing as players and as a program," said Hinson.
Following this weekend, the Eagles will travel to Pullman, Wash. to face Minnesota (Feb. 23) and Washington State (Feb. 24). For more information on Eastern Washington's women's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
