CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team hits the road to Pullman, Wash. this weekend to battle Minnesota (Feb. 23) and Washington State (Feb. 24). The Eagles are 3-3 overall and have yet to start conference play.

"We are coming off of this last weekend really motivated and confident in what we can do with the rest of our non-conference schedule," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "It's been great to see the way the whole team is grinding and competing with such tough competition. Gonzaga is ranked 41 in the latest team rankings and we feel like we were toe-to-toe with them and competed really tough. We are going to take the same mentality into this weekend's matches and then right into conference play. We know that we have to bring grit and the desire to be our best on every point we play and that will be the emphasis of our preparation these next few days."

The squad most recently hosted Lewis-Clark State College where they swept the competition 7-0. Janaya Smith and Rylee Braeden won in the No. 1 doubles spot 6-1 and the next two doubles matches followed nicely with 6-0 wins to get the doubles point, followed by six straight singles victories. The team then went on to face Gonzaga (0-7).

The Minnesota Golden Gophers are 7-3 overall coming into the weekend. They will battle Washington State before Eastern on Friday (Feb. 23). The Gophers are coming off of a losing weekend against Missouri (3-4) and Memphis (3-4).

Washington State is 7-1 overall after their latest matches against North Texas (4-1) and Kansas State (3-4). Their seven-women roster features freshman Michaela Bayerlova who has only one set loss in the collegiate season.

Following this weekend, the Eagles will travel to face Northern Colorado and North Dakota to begin Big Sky Conference competition. For more information on Eastern Washington's women's tennis, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
