CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington women's basketball team looks to go for the season sweep over the Idaho Vandals this Friday (Feb. 9). After topping them at home back in January, the Eagles travel to Moscow for a 5 p.m. PT tip with the men's team to follow at 7:30. The action will be broadcast live regionally on SWX as well as WatchBigSky.com and Pluto TV Ch. 242.
Last season, both teams picked up victories on their own home courts. Eastern Washington then knocked Idaho out of the Big Sky Conference Tournament before the Vandals returned the favor and knocked them out of the second round of the Women's Basketball Invitational at Reese Court. The rivalry hit the reset button when the 2017-18 season began, and EWU picked up a 71-64 victory on Jan. 12 in Reese Court.
With only seven regular season matches remaining, Eastern Washington is encountering an Idaho team that is heating up at the right time, and they are riding a six-game win streak. EWU has won two straight, and sit in a tie for third place with Montana State in the conference standings with a 7-4 league record and 12-11 overall. Idaho is in a three-way tie for second with Northern Colorado and Montana as they are 8-3 in league play and 12-10 overall.
The matchup features two of the Big Sky's, and the nation's, top shooters in Eastern's
Delaney Hodgins and Idaho's Mikayla Ferenz. Ferenz leads the conference with 22.2 points per game and Hodgins follows closely with 20.8 points per game. When they faced off earlier this season, the Eagles limited Ferenz to 18 points while Hodgins posted 19 with 12 rebounds for a double-double.
After breaking Eastern's all-time scoring record against Sacramento State on Feb. 1, Hodgins was tabbed BSC Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks. Helping EWU go 2-0 over the weekend, she scored 55 points in two games for a 27.5/game average. She also shot 21-for-39 from field goal range (53.8 percent), 5-for-10 from three-point range (50 percent) and went 8-for-12 from the line (66.7). She also totaled 11 rebounds, five assists, six blocks and eight steals.
Hodgins averages 20.8 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game and is on a 19-game double-digit scoring streak. Junior
Violet Kapri Morrow is on a hot streak of her own, averaging 14.7 points per game and scoring in double figures in the last nine games, including posting over 20 points in five of them.
Symone Starks averages 9.1 points per game and lead the conference with 3.1 steals per game. As a team, the Eagles average 65.0 points and 35.3 rebounds per game and are shooting over 40 percent from field goal range on the season.
SERIES HISTORY: EWU leads trails the all-time series, 32-34, but have won seven out of the last 10 meetings. In Moscow, the Eagles trail 9-19. Last season, each team picked up victories on their own home courts during the regular season.
ROAD TO 2,000: Delaney Hodgins, who set Eastern Washington's all-time career scoring record on Feb. 1, now has 1,906 career points. With seven regular season games remaining, she looks to be the first Eagle ever to join the 2,000 point club and just the fourth player in Big Sky history. She currently sits at sixth on the BSC career scoring list.
Hodgins broke her older sister and former teammate Hayley Hodgins' (2013-16) mark of 1,865. The two sisters own the distinction of being the only two Eagles to eclipse the 1,800-point mark. Hayley Hodgins broke the all-time scoring record that previously stood for 29 years on Feb. 20, 2016 with 1,733 career points at home against Portland State, and her record only stood for 712 days. Hodgins began the season in fifth place overall with 1,428 points, just 437 points away from the record. She entered the Sacramento State game on Feb. 1 needing just 15 points and she broke the record in the second quarter, never looking back as she finished the night with 28 points.
SCHULLER REACHES MILESTONE: Head women's basketball coach
Wendy Schuller, who is in her 17th year at the helm, just celebrated her 500th game at Eastern on Jan. 20. If the Eagles win on Friday, it will be win No. 250 for Schuller. Her first victory came on Nov. 23, 2001 against Hartford at the Georgia Tech Classic in Atlanta, picking up a 67-50 victory.
UP NEXT: The game at Idaho begins a three-game road stretch for the Eagles. After Friday, EWU heads to Montana for a matchup against the Griz on Feb. 15 and Montana State on Feb. 17. They then return home for the final games inside Reese Court against Weber State (Feb. 22) and Idaho State (Feb. 24) for
Delaney Hodgins' and
Mariah Cunningham's senior night.
