CHENEY, Wash. -- The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team travels to California to face Cal Poly (Mar. 26), Fresno State (Mar. 28) and Sacramento State (Mar. 30) next week. The Eagles currently sit at a 6-6 mark overall and 3-1 in conference after their latest victory over Idaho State (4-3) last Monday (Mar. 19). Eastern fell to Northern Arizona 5-2 in conference play on Saturday (Mar. 17).
First serve against Cal Poly will be at 11 a.m. at a neutral site in Fresno, Calif. The Mustang's are 3-9 overall and 0-2 in the Big West Conference and are coming off two losses against Sacramento State (5-2) and Santa Clara (4-0). They are ranked eighth overall in the Big West and this will be Eastern's first time playing them.
The Eagles face Fresno State for a 6 p.m. matchup. The Bulldogs sit at a 4-10 mark in the regular season and have yet to start Mountain West Conference competition. Fresno State is coming off a 5-2 win against Dartmouth (Mar. 17) and a 5-2 loss to Gonzaga (Mar. 16). Their eight-woman squad features Emma Wilson and Georgia Lawson who were ranked at No. 55 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Eagles battled Fresno State last year and fell 1-6.
Eastern closes the week with a Big Sky Conference match against the Hornets with the first serve set for 3 p.m. Sacramento State is 5-9 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky coming off a winning weekend against Montana (7-0) and Montana State (4-3). Last time the Eagles and the Hornets faced off in 2017 the Eagles fell 1-6.
"It's been great getting outside to train this week and we are looking forward to transitioning to outdoor tennis in California," said head coach
Dustin Hinson. "We have some tough non-conference matches early in the week to help prepare us for our conference match against Sacramento State on Friday. We are moving forward with a 'no regret' mindset and challenging ourselves to leave it all on the court in terms of effort and energy."
Following the week the squad travels to Idaho for a conference match against the Vandals (Apr. 4) and hosts Portland State (Apr. 8).
