FRESNO, Calif. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team dropped their non-conference match to Cal Poly today (Mar. 26) with a 5-2 loss. The Eagles are now 6-7 overall and remain 3-1 in conference.
"It's definitely fun to be back outside to play the game," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "It's really a completely different approach to tennis when you're outdoors. Today's match was a good mix of working in our rhythm and having a desire to find a way to come out on top. Doubles was really close, one shot here or there really made the difference."
Janaya Smith and Rylee Braeden teamed up on the first court in doubles play but fell 5-7. Stephanie Broussard and Valentina Sottile worked together at the No. 3 spot but lost 2-6 to give the Mustang's the doubles point. Faye Worrall and Zoey Nelson teamed up at No. 2 where the match ended unfinished with the Eagles in the lead (6-5).
Smith took the first court to open up singles play and lost in two sets (4-6, 3-6), followed by Nelson who dropped her match 3-6, 1-6. Braeden found success at No. 3 with a two-set victory over her opponent (6-4, 6-0) to put the Eagles on the board as well as Broussard who followed with a three-set win over her opponent (6-3, 3-6, 10-6). Worrall played at No. 5 and fell 4-6, 0-6, followed by Sottile who lost 1-6, 6-7 (2) to close the overall match.
"I'm happy for Rylee and Stephanie," said Hinson. "They were able to stay true to their style of tennis and found the way to win. Overall we made progress with our rhythm and our effort and energy were great. We will learn from some things, make adjustments, and be ready for more opportunities to compete on Wednesday and Friday."
The Eagles look forward to continuing competition in California with a 6 p.m. match time against Fresno State (Mar. 28) and a 3 p.m. match time against Sacramento State (Mar. 30) for a Big Sky Conference battle.
