Eagles Fall to Sacramento State in Close Big Sky Conference Match, 4-3

Eastern Washington clinched the doubles point but came up short in singles play

FULL RESULTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –
The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team dropped their conference match to Sacramento State today (Mar. 30), 4-3. The Eagles are now 6-9 overall and 3-2 in conference.

"This was a tough one today," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "We came out and did a really good job of dominating the doubles. That was impressive and something that we want to continue to bring to the court in our remaining conference matches."

The Eagles secured the doubles point in dominating fashion with Janaya Smith and Rylee Braeden winning at No.1 (6-0). Zoey Nelson and Faye Worrall's match at No. 2 went unfinished (5-2) after Stephanie Broussard and Rachel Swindell won at No. 3 (6-2).

Smith opened up singles play but fell (2-6, 0-6) followed by Nelson who lost at No. 2 in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 3-6). Braeden clinched a singles win at No. 3 in two sets (6-3, 6-2), as well as Broussard (6-4, 6-4) to give the Eagles three points in the overall match. Worrall fell to her opponent (6-2, 6-1) and Swindell lost at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2).

"Singles was a really back and forth battle," said Hinson. "Rylee and Stephanie were fantastic during the spring break trip. They both went 3-0 in singles and did a fantastic job working through some tough opponents today. Ultimately we weren't able to execute on a few key moments in the other singles matches and that was the difference. We have a lot of matches remaining and we will use this tough loss as motivation to work hard moving forward."

The squad competes again next week (Apr. 4) against conference competitor, Idaho. For more information on Eastern Washington's women's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
