CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team defeated Portland State today (Apr. 8), 7-0 to put them at a 7-10 mark overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky Conference.
"I'm very proud of how we were able to come out on top today," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "We won 7-0 but it was much closer than that score would indicate. We had to really dig in and fight to come through in several of the matches. In each of those cases, we showed an ability to find a way to come out on top. The mental strength we showed was really good and it felt great to come out on top. We are going to bring this same mindset into our training sessions and matches moving forward."
Janaya Smith teamed up with Rylee Braeden to open up doubles competition with a 6-0 victory. Stephanie Broussard and Rachel Swindell found success and won at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. Zoey Nelson and Faye Worrall won their match by default at No. 2.
Smith competed on the first court in singles and had a two-set victory (6-1, 6-2), followed by Nelson who took her match to three sets and came out on top, 5-7, 7-6 (0), 10-7. Braeden continued the winning streak with another three-set win at 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-6, followed by Broussard (6-0, 6-2) and Worrall (4-6, 6-0, 10-4). With the Eagle victory already decided, Swindell won by default at No. 6.
The Eagles will play conference rivals Montana State (Apr. 13) next weekend followed by an early match against Montana (Apr. 15). For more information on Eastern Washington's women's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
