The Eagles look to continue their success after the long winter break

Schedule l Live Results

The Eastern Washington University track and field teams make their 2019 debut at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho. The Multi-Events start this Friday and the rest of the meet starts Saturday (Jan. 11-12).

The men's heptathlon will begin at 10:40 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday along with the women's pentathlon at 11 a.m. Competition continues on Saturday with the conclusion of the heptathlon at noon. The field events begin at 9:00a.m. and running events starts at noon.

"I am looking forward to the meet," said head coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "It will give our athletes a chance to shake of the rust from the holiday break and see where they are at. It will also be the first meet of the season that we will have a full squad competing."

The Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open is the second of six indoor meets before the Big Sky Indoor Championships on Feb. 21-23 in Bozeman, Mont.

"I feel this meet is a great early indoor season meet," said head coach Stan Kerr. "The Idaho facility has been a venue that has generated solid performances for our athletes. The other promising factor is that the level of competition is going to be very good.

Previous Meet Recap

The last meet for the Eagles was on Dec. 1, when they hosted the EWU Candy Cane X. The men defeated University of Montana, while the women fell by five points to the Grizzlies.

On the men's side, Eastern swept the running competitions, placing first in all the events. Senior Parker Bowden took first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.51, just missing the Candy Cane record he set the previous year.

In the jumping competitions, junior Keshun McGee won the triple jump with a jump of 51-3 3/4 and in the long jump with a jump of 24-7 1/4. Killion McGinniss won the high jump and set a personal record with a jump of 6-9 1/2 and putting him tied for eighth on the EWU all-time list.

On the women's side, Dominique Butler broke the EWU pentathlon record with 3,532 points. Elizabeth Prouty won the pole vault and set a personal best with a vault of 13-4 to place her fourth on the all-time list at EWU.

Senior Paris Flenoy took first place in the shot put for the Eagles with a throw of 44-5 1/4, while freshman Hadassah Ward finished right behind her with a throw of 44-0 1/2.

More Comments from Head Coach Stan Kerr

Keshun McGee, Killion McGinniss and Bailey Aiello (jumps), Jeremy VanAssche and Parker Bowden (sprints/hurdles), Isaac Barville and Domenic Rehm (distance) and Garrett Peoples and Dante Tyler (throws) are the guys we're looking to in terms of keeping our talented squad moving forward following December's Candy Cane meet.

The generous holiday break does impact the training plan, however, our team is well aware of the compact nature of the indoor season and typically returns to EWU fit and ready to compete.

More Comments from Head Coach Marcia Mecklenburg

Individually it will be fun to watch our Big Sky defending champion, Liz Prouty in the pole vault. Hopefully she will be taking some attempts at 14 feet. Dominic Butler will be competing in another Heptathlon. It would be great to see her break the school record again.

We have a couple of athletes that weren't able to participate in the Candy Cane Meet in December. Meagan McCurdy is one of those athletes and I know she is excited to get going.  It will be good to have the distance runners joining us for their first meet of the season. Our new athletes have a meet under their belt, so I am excited to see if they have their adrenaline a little more under control and can improve on some marks.
