The first day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships wrapped up today (Feb. 21) for the Eastern Washington University track and field team.
                                    Â
Senior Dominique Butler finished in sixth place in the pentathlon with school and personal records of 3,597 points, breaking her previous record of 3,549 on the all-time list.Â
"It was a great day for EWU in the pentathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Conference Championships," said head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg. "Dominique Butler set a new school record and Margaret Nelson scored over 3,000 points for the first time. Dominique placed sixth which put us on the board. We couldn't have asked for a better start to the meet."
Junior Margret Nelson was the next Eagle to finish with 3,137 points placing 15th overall.
With four events concluded in the men's heptathlon, Quinton Porterfield is currently sitting in eight place for the Eagles with 2,700 points.
Freshman Caleb Johnson is currently in 11th with 2,511 points and had a first-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 45-3 3/4.
Senior Forrest Wallace is currently sitting in 13th place with 2,496 points and had a second place finish in the high jump with a jump of 6-5.
"Day one had lots of ups and downs for our heps," said head coach
Stan Kerr. "Quintin Porterfield posted a decent score and Caleb Johnson and Forrest Wallace had strong individual events. Elijah had hamstring woes in the 60-meter dash and was, sadly, unable to continue competing. Tomorrow the guys have three events and look to improve their rankings in the event."
The events will continue tomorrow (Feb. 22), at 9 a.m.
Â
The individual field events and running events will begin at 2 p.m.
