With a Regular Season Title Up for Grabs, Women's Tennis Heads to Southern Utah and Northern Arizona

The Eagles are currently in a three-way tie for first place with two regular season matches remaining

CHENEY, WASH.-- The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team hits the road for their final two matches of the 2019 season. The Eagles will compete against Southern Utah on Friday (April 19), before taking on Northern Arizona on Sunday (April 21).

Eastern sits at 11-8 overall and 7-1 in Big Sky Conference play, which is already the most conference wins in a single season in program history with two matches to go. The Eagles are currently in a three-way tie for first place along with Idaho and Northern Arizona and have qualified for the conference championship for the second consecutive season. Idaho will also play at Northern Arizona and Southern Utah this weekend. Eastern is currently fighting for its first-ever Big Sky Regular Season title and a first-round bye at the conference tournament, which goes to the top-two teams.

"We have had a great week of practices leading up to to our final two regular season conference matches," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "We know that we will face some tough teams this weekend on the road but our mindset will stay the same. We have to be mentally tough and we have to face things one point at a time. If we can do that, we know we give ourselves the best chance at coming out on top."

The Eagles play Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah at 1 p.m. Pacific time on Friday. The Thunderbirds have an overall record of 12-8 and 5-3 in Big Sky play. With this record, the Thunderbirds sit in fifth place overall in the Big Sky standings and are still looking to earn a spot at the conference tournament. SUU is led by head coach Monroe Walker.

Before returning home, Eastern will compete against third ranked Northern Arizona, who has an overall record of 11-8 and 7-1 in Big Sky play. The Lumberjacks are led by head coach Ewa Bogusz, who is in her first year as head coach. Sunday's match is set to begin at 10 a.m. PT in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Lumberjacks are the defending tournament champions and have already earned a spot in the championships.

Following this weekend's road trip, the Eagles will prepare for the Big Sky Conference Championship which is being held in Phoenix, Arizona on April 25-27.
