CHENEY, Wash. – Eastern Washington University head women's tennis coach Dustin Hinson has announced another addition to the 2020-21 roster in Scout Mathews. Mathews inked her National Letter of Intent on March 12, prior to the NCAA recruiting freeze due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
"I'm very excited to welcome Scout to EWU and to the Eagle tennis program. She is a very talented and experienced national-level athlete with outstanding results.  She will immediately strengthen our team from a tennis perspective. Equally as exciting from a coach's perspective is Scout's ability to connect with those around her and her desire to work with others to be successful.  When we welcomed Scout to campus for a visit, we all felt an immediate comfort level and we shared the same passion and desire for doing something great, something bigger than what we can do individually," said Hinson. "That type of energy is infectious and exemplifies the type of leadership I'm continually seeking to add to our program. Scout is also a great student in the classroom and is self-driven due to her extensive home-schooling background.  That's another positive factor in her recruitment and one that will serve her well here at Eastern.  She has all of the tools and determination to have a really successful college tennis career and I'm very glad to welcome her to the Eagle tennis family!"
 
Mathews hails from Ojai, Calif., but currently resides in Hilton Head Island, S.C., where she attends Van Der Meer Tennis Academy.
 
According to TennisRecruiting.net, Mathews is a top-50 five-star class of 2020 recruit and is undefeated against every other five-star recruit she's faced in the last year.
 
Over the summer, Mathews won five matches in Southern Level 1, falling to only to an UTR 11 opponent in the semifinals. In Southern Level 2 competition last spring, she also won five matches, including a match in the finals.
 
In the fall of 2018, Mathews played at the Southern Level 1A and earned a third-place finish after winning five matches. She picked up big victories over Power 5 conference commits before falling in the quarterfinals.
 
Mathews competed on the National Clay Courts in 2018 where she recorded a 2-1 overall record before falling to an UTR 11 opponent.
 
She also made it to the finals in Ojai in girl's 14's and 16's.
 
Mathews joins Jennifer Kida who was announced on Nov. 21, 2019. Her parents are Pieter and Karen Mathews, and she has aspirations of becoming a physician's assistant.
