Eagles Give Warm Welcome to New Assistant Track and Field Coaches

Majesty Tutson comes on to coach the throwers, while Jonina Brinson coaches the jumps and multis

Eastern Washington University director of track and field/cross country, Erin Tucker, has announced the two new additions to his coaching staff. The Eagles welcome Majesty Tutson who will coach the throwers, and Jonina Brinson will coach the jumpers and the multis.

Majesty Tutson

Tutson comes from the University of New Orleans where she was an assistant throws coach since the Fall of 2021. Prior to joining the Privateers, she was a coach at Alabama State where she started as a graduate assistant in 2014 before being elevated to a full-time assistant in 2016.

"I talked to several coaches during my search and Majesty's name kept coming up from coaches in different circles. In our first conversation, I was extremely impressed and knew her personality and experience are what we need here at Eastern," said Tucker. "She commands every room she is in and I am excited about adding her to our staff. Our student-athletes are extremely fortunate to get such a great person to coach them. She is following a legend in Marcia Mecklenburg and we cannot wait to continue to move the program forward."

At UNO, Tutson coached two conference champions in the men's and women's hammer, plus two runner-up's in the women's discus and men's weight throw, in addition to a women's discus school record and a men's discus regional qualifier.

At Alabama State, she helped the Hornets to 11 Indoor SWAC Championships, seven Outdoor SWAC Championships, 12 Individual Conference champions, 49 Individual All-SWAC selections, and a pair of SWAC championships MVPs.

Tutson earned her undergraduate degree at Iowa, where she was a decorated thrower from 2009-13. She was an All-American discus thrower in 2013, and qualified for NCAA regionals all four years. She was a two-time Big Ten Conference runner-up in the discus and was Iowa's female track and field MVP as a senior. At one point, she held school records in the weight throw and discus throw.

She earned two Master's degrees from Alabama State in 2016 and 2019.

Jonina Brinson

Brinson comes from Buena Vista University. She joined the program as an assistant coach in 2020 before being elevated to head coach, a position she's held since the Spring of 2021.

"Adding a head coach to the staff is something that I hoped to do before I arrived, and I hit a home run with Jonina. Her passion, enthusiasm, and drive along with her head coach experience made this an easy choice," said Tucker. "I am thankful she chose us. She has large shoes to fill replacing Dave Nielson, but he left a great legacy here for her to build upon."

In each of her two seasons, she led the women's outdoor track and field team to its highest point total at the A-R-C Championships, and the 2022 indoor team posted its highest finish since 2013. In two years, she coached the Beavers to a combined 18 all-conference performances, including four conference champions and four All-American finishes.

In 2021-22, Brinson coached 17 men to BVU's all-time top-ten list along with 22 women and three Midwest All-Region athletes.

In 2020-21, Brinson coached two individual conference champions and one national qualifier. After she finished her athletic career at Bethune-Cookman, she stayed on and was a graduate assistant coach for the jumps and multi events.

Brinson had a standout career at the University of Mobile. She was a 10-time NAIA All-American and a two-time NAIA national champion in the long jump. She set 11 indoor and outdoor school records, and was named the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Track Athlete of the Year in 2016 and the SSAC Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 2017.

Brinson went on to join Bethune-Cookman's program where she was named the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Field Athlete of the Year in 2018 and was also an NCAA qualifier. She earned her Bachelor's degree in psychology from Mobile in 2017.
