Day One

The first day of the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships started today (Feb. 24) in Bozeman, Mont., at the Worthington Arena.
After one event, Eastern's women's team is second with six points. Today started out with the men's heptathlon which will conclude tomorrow. The women's pentathlon started and concluded today.
Maggie Nelson and
Hayden McAuliff were the two women from Eastern Washington University that competed in the pentathlon today.
Nelson broke her own school record in the pentathlon by placing third overall with 3,702 points. Her point total from today's meet broke her previous school record of 3,604 points. Nelson is Eastern Washington's first-ever all-conference performer in program history in the pentathlon.
"Now that is how I like starting a meet, a new school record and our first medalist. Nelson's third-place finish in the pentathlon was about as well rounded a competition for her as you can get. She had personal records in four out of five events. Kudos to Coach
Dave Nielsen for coaching six heptathletes and two pentathletes all competing at the same time," explained women's head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg.
Nelson also had personal bests in four out of the five events which were the 60-meter hurdles (11th, 9.43, 822 pts), high jump (7th, 5-4 1/4, 771 pts), shot put (1st, 41-11 1/4, 713 pts), and the long jump (2nd, 18-3 1/4, 720 pts). Nelson also placed 11
th in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:31.38 for 676 points.
McAuliff placed 14
th overall in the pentathlon with 3,118 points.
Six Eagles from the men's team competed today in the heptathlon in
Elijah Conley,
Chris Homen,
John Grieshaber,
Quintin Porterfield,
Ryan Rieckmann, and
Race Treat.
Five out of six of the competitors today placed in the top ten after day one of the heptathlon.
"Coach Nielsen had the multis rolling strong today in day one of the heptathlon and finished 2-6-7-8-9 in the rankings. Treat currently leads the EWU crew. The crew is excited heading into day two of the heptathlon tomorrow. Watching the multis get after it was enjoyable for much of the team that were able to watch the meet. There were personal records throughout the group, but Homen shined brightly with hitting a personal record in all four events," explained men's head coach
Stan Kerr.
Treat has 2,912 points total to place second. In the men's 60-meter dash Treat placed fourth with a time of 7.21. He also placed fourth in the men's long jump with a mark of 21-6 3/4. In the men's shot put he also placed fourth with a mark of 40-3 1/2. In the men's high jump, he placed third with a mark of 6-5.
Porterfield has 2,724 points total to place him in sixth. Porterfield placed second in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.16. He also placed sixth in the men's long jump with a mark of 21-4 1/4. In the men's shot put he placed eighth with a mark of 36-11 3/4. Tenth place went to him and Conley in the men's high jump with a mark of 5-11 1/4.
Rieckmann has 2,717 points total to place him in seventh. He placed first in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.13. In the men's long jump he placed second with a mark of 22-0 1/4.
Conley has 2,680 points total to place him in eighth. He placed seventh in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.35. In men's shot put he placed second with a mark of 42-7 1/2.
Homen has 2,659 points total to place him in ninth. In the men's 60-meter dash he placed fifth with a time of 7.28. In the men's high jump, he placed seventh with a mark of 6-1 1/2. He also placed ninth in the men's shot put and men's long jump. In the men's shot put he had a mark of 36-4. In the men's long jump he had a mark of 20-5 1/4. Right now, Homen currently has 2,659 points in the heptathlon.
Grieshaber currently has 2,245 points overall for the heptathlon placing him in 16th.
"The guys set a great tone for the team as we enter the open events tomorrow afternoon," said Kerr.
"It was a great first day. One day down, two to go," stated Mecklenburg.
Eastern Washington University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete tomorrow (Feb. 25) at the second day of the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Worthington Arena in Bozeman, Mont.
