CHENEY, Wash. - The Eastern Washington University women's tennis squad hosted Idaho today outside at the EWU Tennis Courts and fell short in an intense 4-3 decision.
Before the match began, Eastern honored Canadian native
Yasmin Mansouri, who has been an outstanding force during her time at EWU. Mansouri comes from Vancouver, B.C., and has recorded a total of 47 wins in her Eagle career. Along with Mansouri, Eastern honored
Louise Waite in spirit, who graduates from the program after three solid years.
"I'm really proud of what our seniors gave to this program," said head coach
Dustin Hinson. "
Yasmin Mansouri and
Louise Waite have had an amazing influence on our program and I'm very proud of what they have accomplished."
With
Scout Mathews and
Isabella Foshee winning 6-1 at No. 3 during doubles play, a 6-3 loss at both No. 1 and No. 2 left the Eagles just short of the day's opening point at the EWU Tennis Courts in Cheney.
"This wasn't the way we wanted today to end up. But I'm really proud of this team. We had so many obstacles to overcome this year and the team never allowed it to affect their ability to give their best effort," Hinson stated. "We can't control a lot of things that happen in life, but we can control how we respond to those things. And I'm proud of the response we had all year."
Kenzington Mann bounced back with a dominant performance at No. 6 singles, with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Idaho's Emery Baker, the first of Eastern Washington's three victories during singles play. The match would tie up, 1-1. The Eagles then took the lead 2-1, compliments to Foshee, who dominated at No. 5, giving up only one point across the two sets (6-1, 6-0).
However, a trio of straight set losses left the Eagles unable to gather up the four victories needed for the team win.
Mathews dug deep to close the score line with a victory at No. 2 against Melissa Huchet, (6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4), adding on the third point.
"We never gave up and we never had excuses. That has made us stronger as a team overall and that is going to help us in the future. We became more resilient throughout the year and I'm excited for the future of this team."
