Eastern Travels to Pocatello, Idaho for Big Sky Outdoor Championships

Eastern has 36 marks in the top-ten in the Big Sky Conference this season

Eastern Washington University's men's and women's track and field teams have the regular season behind them, and are now preparing to travel to Pocatello, Idaho this weekend (May 11-14) for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Davis Field.
 
"It will be great to compete at Idaho State at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships again. They have been out of the rotation for a while as they worked to get their facility remodeled.  We are all looking forward to seeing the changes," stated head women's coach Marcia Mecklenburg.
 
On Wednesday the meet will begin at 9 a.m. Pacific Time with the decathlon (100-meter, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400-meter). Then the heptathlon will begin at 9:30 a.m. PT with the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200-meter.
 
On Thursday the meet will also begin at 9 a.m. PT with the decathlon (110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500-meter). Then the heptathlon will begin at 9:30 a.m. PT with the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter.
 
Friday the field events will begin at 9 a.m. PT with the women's hammer throw and the running events will begin at 12:30 p.m. PT with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
 
Field events on Saturday will begin at 8:30 a.m. PT with the men's hammer throw. The running events will begin at 1 p.m. PT with the men's 4x100-meter relay final.
 
Eastern has 36 marks in the top-ten in the Big Sky Conference. Nine of these athletes have set multiple of these top-ten marks.
 
"The Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships is an outstanding event that truly showcases the conference's finest athletes. This gathering of approximately 500 athletes never fails to generate numerous regional and national caliber performances," explained head men's coach Stan Kerr. "The squad we have going to the meet is a solid blend of veterans who know what to expect in terms of competition at the meet and talented first timers who have lofty ambitions. As we often say in practice, it's time to put points on the board."
 
On the men's side…
 
Junior Joe Gauthier is currently ranked sixth in the men's 100-meter with a time of 10.62 at the Pacific Coast Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Gauthier competed in the men's 100-meter and placed first with a time of 10.52.
 
Daniel Gaik is currently ranked eighth in the 100-meter with a time of 10.65 at the Whitworth Peace Meet. This mark is eighth in the Eastern Washington University record book on the all-time top-ten list for that event. Gaik is also ranked sixth in the men's 200-meter with a time of 21.46 at the Steve Scott Invitational. This mark is also in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list where he is 10th. He also is ranked third in the men's 400-meter with a time of 47.15 at the Wildcat Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Gaik competed in the 400-meters and finished third with a time of 47.00.
 
Junior Liam Bracken is currently ranked eighth in the men's 400-meters with a time of 48.22 at the Wildcat Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Bracken competed in the men's 400-meter and placed seventh with a time of 48.49.
 
Sophomore Justin Roosma is currently ninth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.78 at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet. In 2021, Roosma set the school record for the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:54.69.
 
Sophomore Alex Bishop is currently third in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-10 3/4 at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet. This mark set a new mark in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list. He is ninth on the list.
 
Sophomore Zach Klobutcher is currently ranked third in the men's pole vault with a mark of 16-7 1/4 at the Pacific Coast Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Klobutcher placed second and had a personal record in the men's pole vault with a mark of 16-11.
 
Sophomore Brayden Freitag is currently ranked fourth in the men's pole vault with a mark of 16-6 at the Tom Gage Classic. This mark set a new record in the EWU record book. He is seventh on the all-time top-ten list in that event. He also is ranked ninth in the decathlon with 5,321 points at the Buc Scoring Meet and Multi.
 
Junior Bobby Say is ranked sixth in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-11 at the Beach Invitational. He also is ranked third in the men's triple jump with a mark of 51-0 3/4 at the Pacific Coast Invitational. This mark set a new record in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list. He is ranked fifth on the list in that event. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Say competed in the men's triple jump and placed fourth with a mark of 48-10 3/4. At the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships Say placed second in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-8 1/4. This marked the second all-conference honor of his career and the first indoors. Say also competed in the men's triple jump at the Big Sky Indoor Championships and placed second with a mark of 50-7 1/2.
 
Senior Quintin Porterfield is ranked 10th in the men's long jump with a mark of 22-8 1/2 at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet. He also is ranked fourth in the decathlon with 6,135 points at the Bryan Clay Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Porterfield placed fifth in the decathlon with 6,142 points which was a single point shy from fourth place. He came 495 points from becoming Eastern's first BSC All-Conference performer in that event in 20 years, and only the fourth in EWU's 35-year history in the Big Sky Confernece.
 
Senior Garrett Peoples is ranked ninth in the men's shot put with a mark of 54-4 1/2 at the Hayward Premiere. He is also ranked ninth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 188-10 at the Hayward Premiere.
 
Senior Colton Kautz is ranked eighth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 193-8 at the Steve Scott Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Kautz competed in the hammer throw and placed fourth with a mark of 204-8.
 
Freshman Ryan Rieckmann is ranked ninth in the men's javelin with a mark of 196-10 at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet.
 
Chris Homen is ranked sixth in the decathlon with 6,006 points at the Buc Scoring Meet and Multi. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Homen placed eighth in the decathlon with 5,755 points.
 
Elijah Conley is ranked seventh in the decathlon with 5,834 points at the Buc Scoring Meet and Multi. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Conley placed 11th with 5,512 points.
 
Gauthier, Bracken, Gaik, and Logan Allen are ranked second in the men's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.84 at the Beach Invitational. This mark set a new mark in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list. They are fifth on the list in that event.
 
Porterfield, Camden Phelps, Bracken, and Gaik are ranked seventh in the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:18.10 at the Wildcat Invitational.
 
On the women's side…
 
Sophomore Katie Petsch is ranked fifth in the women's 100-meters with a time of 11.78 at the Whitworth Peace Meet. This mark set a new EWU record in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list. For the 100-meter she is sixth on the list.
 
Junior Alyssa Hoffman is ranked eighth in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.17 at the Whitworth Peace Meet. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Hoffman placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.54.
 
Senior Katrina Terry is ranked first in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13-3 3/4 at the Beach Invitational. This mark set a new record in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list and she is seventh in that event. At the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Terry placed second in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13-1 3/4. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Terry competed in the women's pole vault and placed first with a mark of 13-1.
 
Sophomore Savannah Schultz is ranked third in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-11 1/2 at the Al Manuel Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Schultz placed third in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-8. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Schultz placed seventh with a mark of 12-5 1/4.
 
Junior Hally Ruff is ranked fourth in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-9 1/2 at the Pacific Coast Invitational. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Ruff competed in the women's pole vault and placed 10th with a mark of 11-11 1/4.
 
Sophomore Rosalie Folger-Vent is ranked ninth in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-9 1/2 at the Sam Adams Classic. At the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 Folger-Vent placed eighth in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-5 1/4.
 
At the indoor Big Sky Championships in 2022, Eastern finished 1-2-3-4-6 in the women's pole vault. This was the first indoor sweep in any event for the EWU women's team. Morgan Fossen was the champion, followed by Terry, Schultz, Ruff, and Folger-Vent.
 
Sophomore Carissa Stovall is ranked fifth in the women's shot put with a mark of 46-9 1/2 at the Wildcat Invitational. This mark set a new record in the EWU record book and places Stovall seventh on the all-time top-ten list in the shot put.
 
Freshman Kahlani Schloss is ranked ninth in the women's shot put with a mark of 46-9 1/2 at the Tom Gage Classic.
 
Junior Vernice Keyes is ranked fourth in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 188-0 at the Al Manuel Invitational.
 
Senior Maggie Nelson is ranked first in the women's javelin with a mark of 158-8 at the Buc Scoring Meet and Multi. She also is ranked third for the heptathlon with 5,130 points at the Buc Scoring Meet and Multi. These two marks set new marks in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list. In the women's javelin, she is seventh on the list and for the heptathlon, she set the school record. At the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships Nelson set a school record in the pentathlon with 3,604 points. She is also Eastern's first-ever all-conference performer in program history in the pentathlon.
 
Freshman Madison Tareski is ranked third in the women's javelin with a mark of 151-4 at the Al Manuel Invitational.
 
Hoffman, Madelyn Knight, Hayden McAuliff, and Petsch are ranked 10th in the women's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.29 at the Sam Adams Classic.
 
Lidiya Pankova, Hoffman, Haven Nutting, and Faith Kennedy are ranked 10th in the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:59.08 at the Wildcat Invitational.
 
"This is the most important team meet of the year for us so we will be going into it full force. We have athletes competing in all the event areas and it has been a couple of years since that has happened on the women's side. I like the growth and development that shows with the program," explained Mecklenburg. "The goal going into this meet is to finish higher than we are ranked and that includes individually and as a team. If we can do that it will be a great meet for us."
 
The Eagles will next be headed to Fayetteville, Ark., May 25-28 for the NCAA DI West Regional Championships at the John McDonnell Field.
