Eastern Washington University women's tennis hits the road this Friday. Feb. 24 to face Washington State in Pullman, Wash., at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at 12 p.m. Pacific Time. The Eagles return home two days later to welcome Saint Mary's College at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse with first serve set for 11 a.m. PT.
EWU sits 2-2 overall and returns to action after going 1-1 following last weekend's home matchups versus Whitman College (Feb. 18) and Portland (Feb. 19). The Eagles swept the Blues in doubles and singles matches, providing a dominant performance in big moments.
The next day, Eastern Washington battled the Pilots and fell 6-1, with
Renata Gabuzyan picking up the solo win in singles play.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
The Eagles have struggled finding momentum against the Cougars, sitting 1-37 in the overall series. EWU last faced WSU in the 2021-22 season and fell 2-5 in Pullman, with
Isabella Foshee and
Kenzington Mann each finding victory in singles play.
Washington State holds a 5-4 current record and returns to the courts after defeating Minnesota (4-3) last weekend. The Cougars are led by Raquel Atawo who enters her first season at the helm.
SCOUTING SAINT MARY'S COLLEGE
This weekend will mark the first time EWU has faced SMC in school history.
The Gaels currently sit 2-3 overall with wins over Nevada (5-2) and Sacramento State (5-2). They will face Washington State in Pullman before traveling to Cheney on Sunday. Katharina Winterhalter leads SMU at the helm, entering her first year as head coach after serving as the associate head coach from 2011-14. Winterhalter returns to lead the Gaels after leaving to serve as the head coach at Cal Poly for seven years.
