MOSCOW, Idaho — Eastern Washington University pole vaulters
Savannah Schultz and
Hally Ruff took gold and bronze at the 2023 Big Sky Indoor Championships in Moscow, Idaho on Friday, continuing a streak of Eagle dominance in the event.
"It was a great competition," said EWU Director of Track & Field
Erin Tucker. "Hats off to (Savannah). She got our first 'dub' of the weekend. I am so happy for her and coach EA!"
Schultz, a senior from Portland, Ore., earned gold and set a new personal best at 4.12 meters (13'-6.25"), .02 meters better than her previous mark of 4.10. She sits at third on Eastern's all-time indoor performance list — Keisa Monterola set the Eagle record at 4.37 meters in 2012. Schultz finished third last year and second in 2020. There was no championship meet in 2021 due to COVID-19.
Ruff, out of Walla Walla, Wash., took bronze with a vault of 4.02 meters to give the Eagles two women on the podium. She finished fourth last year.
The performance continues Eastern's powerful tradition in the event. Including this year, Eagle women pole vaulters have now placed 14 times in the last 10 Big Sky Indoor Championships, earning five golds, four silvers and five bronzes. They have been held off the podium just twice during that span and placed multiple student-athletes in each of the last four.
The championship meet wraps up on Saturday with several Eagles in the hunt for hardware including, among others, top men's triple jump qualifier Bobby Say and men's 400-meter runner Liam Bracken, who set a new PR and moved into 5th on the EWU all-time list with a 47.66 for the top prelim time on Friday.
