Women’s tennis set for Gonzaga matchup

The Eagles travel to nearby Spokane for third WCC match this season

Eastern Washington University women's tennis team takes on Gonzaga this Saturday, March 4 in Spokane, Wash., with first serve set for 4 p.m. Pacific Time inside the Stevens Center. The Eagles sit 2-5 overall and 0-1 in Big Sky Conference play going into the weekend.

The Eagles return after falling to Idaho in their first conference matchup of the season but earned a few wins along the way. EWU found victory in doubles play, with Renata Gabuzyan teaming up with Kenzington Mann at the No. 2. Gabuzyan battled for another win at the No. 4 singles spot over Idaho player Saffron Dowse (6-7, 6-4, 6-4), while Scout Mathews collected a win at No. 1, defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-4, to give Eastern two points in the match.

The Eagles currently have a 26-46 all-time series record versus Gonzaga and will look to snap a 17-match losing streak to the Bulldogs on Saturday. EWU's last win over GU dates back to February of 2008 where the Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 5-2 in Spokane, Wash.

Gonzaga is led by head coach Natalie Pluskota-Hamberg who enters her second season at the helm. She returns the GU program after serving as the assistant for GU for four years and returning to Spokane following a one-year stint at Arkansas in 2018-19.

Gonzaga is currently 4-5 and faces Idaho at 11 a.m. before hosting EWU.
