The final two regular season matches of the season are on deck for Eastern Washington women's tennis this weekend. Eastern begins its final slate against Weber State tomorrow (April 14) with first serve at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. The Eagles then host Portland State on Sunday (April 16), beginning at 11 a.m. On Sunday, Eastern will celebrate senior day for
Renata Gabuzyan.
On the season, Eastern is 3-11 and 1-5 in conference matches. This past week, the Eagles earned their first conference win of the season, defeating Montana State, 5-2, in Bozeman. Eastern picked up singles wins from
Jennifer Kida, Gabuzyan,
Leandra Nizetic and
Kenzington Mann.
In doubles, the duo of Gabuzyan and Kida won in the No. 2 spot and Mann and Nizetic would clinch the point for the Eagles at the No. 3 spot.
On Sunday, Eastern fell, 3-4, to Montana in Missoula despite wins from
Scout Mathews, Gabuzyan and Mann.
Scouting the Wildcats
Weber State carries a 5-1 Big Sky record this season and is 8-7 overall. Winners of their last four matches, the Wildcats defeated Sacramento State last week, 6-1, in Ogden, Utah. The lone loss for Weber St. came to regular season champion Northern Arizona (3-4) in late February.
At the helm, RuthAnn Allen leads the Wildcats and is in her fourth season with the team. She has a 38-31 overall record and 17-4 in Big Sky matches.
Scouting the Vikings
Portland State sits at 3-3 in conference and has a 9-11 overall record. The Vikings went 1-1 on the road last week, defeating Montana (5-2) on Friday, but losing to Montana State (3-4) on Sunday. In the season, Portland St. is 3-7 on the road.
Head coach Kyle Russell is finishing up his fourth season leading the Vikings. Under Russell's guidance, Portland St. has qualified for the Big Sky Championships the past two seasons.
Prior to Sunday's match with the Eagles, Portland St. will play Idaho in Moscow, Idaho on Friday.
