Eagles grab early momentum, topple Wildcats at home

Eastern wins its second Big Sky match in a Friday afternoon contest against Weber St.

The determination from Eastern Washington women's tennis was on display Friday afternoon (April 14) as they defeated Weber State, 4-3. Eastern opened with two wins in doubles to secure the point and followed up with three singles wins. The Eagles' record improves to 2-5 in conference and 4-11 overall. The Wildcats fall to 5-2 in the Big Sky and 8-8 on the season.

"I'm so proud of this team today. They absolutely poured everything they had into today's match, and they left it all on the court," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "We started out awesome by getting the doubles point. That was huge for our confidence and for momentum moving into singles. Then we had some incredible performances to be able to come out on top for three today. We had great wins by Leandra [Nizetic], Kenzington [Mann] and Jennifer [Kida]. Jennifer was down a set and 5-0 in the second set and came all the way back to win that match. That shows huge heart and a tremendous desire to be your best on the court and I'm super proud to be able to coach a team who never gives up and finishes strong."

Opening the matchup, Renata Gabuzyan and Jennifer Kida defeated Dylan Lolofie and Megan Lombardi in the No. 2 doubles spot (6-3). Scout Mathews and Isabella Foshee, playing at No. 1, then clinched the doubles point for Eastern against Megan Davies and Ana Morett, 7-5.

Moving to singles, Leandra Nizetic set the tone with a two-set win over Kenadee Semenik at the No. 4 spot, holding off a rally in the second set to win 7-6.

Kida rallied to knock off Megan Davies in the No. 2 position, dropping the first set but coming back with a 7-6 win in set two and then 6-1 in the third.

At the No. 5 spot, Kenzington Mann delivered the match-clinching win, defeating Cindy Ping An (6-2(2-0), 7-6).
