Eagles wrap up track regular season in Tucson and Corvallis

Eastern now turns their focus to the conference championships in ten days

TUCSON, Ariz. / CORVALLIS, Ore.  The Eastern Washington University Track and Field team wrapped up their 2023 regular season schedule on Saturday as the team finished competitions at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. and Oregon State High Performance Meet in Corvallis, Ore. Several Eagles set new career marks and moved into the top-10 on the Big Sky conference performance list for 2023.

"Last one best one before we start championship season," said EWU Director of Track and Field Erin Tucker. "We had some highs and a few lows, but everyone fought this weekend and I cannot ask for more."

The team will take the next week off from competition to focus on training for the 2023 Big Sky Outdoor Championships, scheduled for May 10-13 in Greeley, Colo.

"The postseason begins on Monday. We now focus on elevating this program like we talked about on my first day," Tucker continued. "Change is difficult because it comes with expectations. I like how some have answered the call and I hope they can pull up those that are working on answering that call."

Eastern pulled in six medals in the conference indoor championships in Moscow in February, including golds in men's and women's pole vault (Zach Klobutcher, Hally Ruff) as well as the men's triple jump (Bobby Say).

"This is what it is all about. This is when we make it all worth it! Let's move this PR train to the Big Sky meet so we can walk away knowing we left no stone unturned!" Tucker added.

Desert Heat Classic — Tucson, Arizona (April 29)

Madelyn Knight posted a 1:01.91 in the women's 400-meter hurdles, improving from 9th to 8th on Eastern's performance list and 4th in the Big Sky this season.

Savannah Schultz moved into 2nd in the Big Sky after clearing 4.05 meters (13' 3.5") in the women's pole vault, good for 4th at the meet. Teammate Hally Ruff is 1st in the conference this season with 4.06 meters, recorded at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State University earlier this month.

Carissa Stovall improved on her career mark in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.32 meters, good for 7th in EWU history and 4th in the Big Sky.

Ryan Rieckmann continued his strong outdoor season, finishing 3rd in the men's javelin in Tucson at 66.54 meters. Rieckmann's 67.49 meter throw at the Beach Invitational remains 3rd in the conference this season.

Oregon State High Performance Meet — Corvallis, Oregon (April 28-29)

Kaylin Sheley pushed into the 10th spot on the EWU all-time outdoor performance list for the women's 800 meters, setting a new personal best with 2:14.43. Sheley also set a new PR in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running in 10:42.39, moving her from 5th to 4th on the EWU all-time list and 10th in the Big Sky.

Nattie Ruzauskas achieved a similar feat as Sheley but just a step behind, setting a new PR in the 800 with a 2:15.72 before another in the steeplechase, moving up one position on the EWU list — from 7th to 6th — with a 10:53.98. Eastern's record in the women's 3,000-meter steeple is 10:10.33, set by Katie Mahoney in 2016.

The women's 4x400 meter relay earned 3rd place at the OSU meet, as Sydney Thweatt, Hayden McAuliff, Haven Nutting and Faith Kennedy turned in a time of 3:55.27. Kennedy finished 3rd in the individual women's 400 meters, running 57.83. Camden Phelps ran a 48.62 on the men's side, moving into 10th on the Big Sky leaderboard.

Chloe DiBiscegle pushed into the conference top-10 in the shot put at 13.41 meters, good for 9th. Kaitlyn Paller is now 6th in the hammer throw after recording 53.41 meters on Saturday.

Finally, Noah Hasselblad set a new 5,000-meter PR in Corvallis, running in 14:18.92, more than 10 seconds faster than his previous career mark, putting him 4th all-time at EWU. He was previously 10th on the Eastern list and finished 7th in the event at the meet.
