In an early Sunday morning (April 9) matchup, Eastern Washington women's tennis dropped its final conference road contest against Montana, 4-3. Eastern falls to 1-5 in the Big Sky and 3-11 overall, while Montana improves to 3-5 in conference and 6-12 overall.
"Today we played a really hard-fought match. We played with grit, heart and determination from start to finish," head coach
Dustin Hinson said. "We came up short in the end but we are holding our heads up because we poured everything we had into these matches. I'm proud of each member of this team."
The Eagles battled hard in doubles, nearly winning the point that could have swung the match.
Scout Mathews and
Isabella Foshee forced a tie breaker against Lauren Dunlap and Rosie Sterk at the No. 1 doubles match, but fell short, 4-7.
Kenzington Mann and
Leandra Nizetic, playing at No. 3, would win 7-5 over Olivia Oosterbaan and Hailey Murphy to give Eastern the opportunity to win the point.
In the singles round,
Scout Mathews earned a three-set win (6-3, 1-6, 6-1) at the No. 1 position to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Wins by
Renata Gabuzyan (7-5, 7-5) and Mann (6-4, 6-3) tied up the match at three. The Grizzlies would managed to close out the match with a win in at the No. 5 spot.
