Eags prepare for Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Colorado

Eastern seeks hardware against the best of the best from the conference

CHENEY, Wash. — The Eastern Washington Eagles Track and Field team heads to Greeley, Colo. this week in search of hardware at the 2023 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Northern Colorado. The four-day event kicks off Wednesday and continues through Saturday.

EWU secured six medals at the conference indoor championships in Moscow, Idaho in February, including golds in the men's triple jump and both men's and women's pole vault. Eastern earned eight podium finishes at the 2022 Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

Headed into this year's event, several Eagles are poised to make their mark with top-3 positions in the Big Sky season performance list.

On the women's side, Hally Ruff (4.07m) and Savannah Schultz (4.05m) sit atop the conference's pole vault rankings at 1st and 2nd, respectively. Schultz won the event in Moscow in February while Ruff finished 3rd. Ruff also finished 3rd in the conference outdoor meet last year.

Dyvhon Fonoti enters the week ranked 3rd in the discus with a mark of 45.65m set at the CWU Wildcat Open on April 22. Also currently in 3rd is Madison Tareski in the javelin with 44.07m set in late March. Tareski took home silver at the 2022 conference championships.

For the Eagle men, indoor championship gold medalists Zach Klobutcher (pole vault; 5.16m) and Bobby Say (triple jump; 15.61m) head to Greeley as the top-ranked competitors in their events. Say is also ranked 2nd in the long jump at 7.51m after finishing 4th in Moscow.

Javelin thrower Ryan Rieckmann hopes to maintain momentum after a great finish to the regular season, throwing a personal best 67.49m at the Beach Invitational in Southern California on April 14. He ranks 2nd among Big Sky competitors this season.

As a team, the Eagles were selected to finish 4th on the men's side and 7th on the women's side in the preseason coaches' poll, which matched their finish at the indoor championships.

The heptathlon and decathlon events will run May 10-11 while the remainder of the meet will begin on Friday, May 12. The full meet schedule is available here. The meet will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
