Schultz and Simmons headline Saturday medalists as Eastern closes out Big Sky Indoor Championships

Pole vaulter and triple jumper extend their own school records on thrilling final day in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — Eastern Washington Track and Field picked up four more medals in the final day of the 2024 Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships in Spokane on Saturday, snagging two more golds. In total, they rounded out the weekend with seven individual podium placements, winning three events, while finishing 9th (men) and 6th (women) in the team standings.

"We had some amazing performances that were heard around this region," said Director of Track & Field Erin Tucker. "I got a lot of calls and texts throughout the weekend about Egypt, Savannah, Zach, Madi, and KP. Just outstanding work from that group."

"We had a lot of PRs at this conference meet and we had a few hiccups, but that is why you have the meet. You want to test yourselves against the best and over the last three days we did that. I am super proud of the entire team for their effort."

Senior Savannah Schultz had a spectacular day, continuing the EWU tradition of excellence in the pole vault with a personal best mark of 4.19 meters (13' 11") to win the event and jump to 4th in Big Sky indoor history. Fellow Eagle Keisa Monterola (2012) holds the all-time record at 14' 2" and now stands as the only vaulter ahead of Schultz on the EWU all-time list.

It's the third-straight Big Sky Indoor Champion for EWU in the women's pole vault as Schultz repeats after winning in 2023. Morgan Fossen won as part of podium sweep in 2022. The Eagles have won the event seven times and earned 21 top-3 finishes.

Junior Caitlin Simmons didn't skip a beat after winning the women's long jump on Friday, extending her stranglehold on the EWU triple jump record with a spectacular 12.75 meter mark, over 6 inches beyond her previous Eagle record set back on Feb. 9 in Seattle and over a foot beyond the second place finisher on Saturday. She is now 10th in Big Sky indoor history in the event, leaping over Sacramento State's Moira Robinson (2012).

Sophomore Kris Phennicie narrowly missed a personal best with a 6.82 in the men's 60-meter dash, earning 3rd in his first Big Sky Championship opportunity for valuable team points. Phennicie transferred to EWU this season from Penn State.

Senior Madelyn Knight went stride for stride with Idaho State's Kyndal Martin in the women's 60-meter hurdles, running an 8.38 — just .01 off her school record time of 8.37 — to earn all-conference honors and a silver medal. She finished 8th indoors last season. Martin ran a blistering 8.28, good for 2nd in Big Sky history, to snag the win.

As a team, EWU finished with 48 points on the women's side, good for 6th place. The men earned 32.5 points for 9th.
