CHENEY, Wash. — Fall camp is less than a week away and Eastern Washington has its captains for the 2024 season. Head coach Aaron Best announced eight Eagle leaders for this season, with four retaining their roles from last season. Efton Chism III, Luke Dahlgren, Darrien Sampson and Brock Harrison were elected captains for the second straight year. Jacob Newsom, Cage Schenck, Nolan Ulm and Austin York join the returning captains for their first season in the role.

Chism III has already garnered preseason recognition in July, earning Big Sky Preseason All-Conference and FCS Football Central All-American. The senior wide receiver finished last season with 84 catches for 932 yards and eight touchdowns, ranking third in the conference and 14th in the nation in receiving yards. He earned Big Sky All-Conference first team and AP All-America third team honors, with third team honors from Stats Perform and Football Central, adding fourth team for Phil Steele FCS fourth team.

Dahlgren started all 11 games on the offensive line for the Eagles last season and has 24 career starts in 36 games played. EWU's offense ranked third in the Big Sky in passing yards and fourth in total offense a season ago.

Sampson returns for his seventh season in Cheney, with 41 career games played, including 28 starts. He has 76 career tackles, with three interceptions and nine pass breakups. He played in three games last season with four tackles and one for loss.

Harrison, beginning his sixth season with the Eagles, recorded a career-high three sacks, along with 27 tackles in 2023. The defensive end had three QB hurries and grabbed his second career interception in EWU's win over UC Davis. During his career, Harrison has 106 tackles and 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries

Newsom is also in his sixth season for Eastern, starting 10 games with 41 total played. The graduate student has 71 career tackles, with four sacks and eight total for loss. Newsom has forced two fumbles in his career. Last season, Newsom started 10 games, with one sack and 17 total tackles.

Schenck had a career year in 2023, recording 27 tackles with 17 solo and 4.5 for a loss from the cornerback spot. The junior was tied for second on the team with two interceptions, recording his first career pick against Idaho. Schenck would get his second interception against Cal Poly and return it for a touchdown, helping the Eagles to the win over the Mustangs.

Ulm hauled in 564 receiving yards on 45 catches last season, both career-highs for the Kelowna, B.C. native. He scored four touchdowns for the second consecutive season and was named to Phil Steele's 2023 FCS Postseason All-Big Sky fourth team. In Eastern's win over Southern Louisiana last season, Ulm had nine catches for 89 yards and one score.
