Offense and Defense face off in first scrimmage of spring

Eastern Washington played its first of two scrimmages leading up to the spring game

CHENEY, Wash. — Practice was put into action on Saturday morning as Eastern Washington football held the first scrimmage of its spring schedule. 

The offense started fast as Nate Bell connected with Jaxon Branch on the first play for a 75-yard touchdown. 

Bell finished the day with 118 yards through the air and two touchdowns. He found Cole Pruett in the endzone for an 11-yard touchdown. 

Branch ended the day with two catches for 82 yards and the score. Pruett had five receptions for 41 yards. Jake Schakel racked up 147 passing yards on the day.

On the ground, Malik Dotson led the team with six carries for 30 yards. Kevin Allen III carried seven times for 23 yards. 

The defense grabbed three interceptions, with Josiah Goode, Bjorn Birmingham, and Gage Brumfield each recording a pick. Brumfield was also the defense's leading tackler with five on the day. 

Gauge Larsen provided the pressure off the edge, making two sacks for 15 yards. He recorded three total tackles. Yemoni Howell also found the QB for a six-yard loss and had two total tackles.

Vincent Macaluso registered three tackles for the Eagles, while Ambrose Marsh, Goode, Shea Robertson, Marcus Nixon, Jesse Taylor, Landen Kahai, and Steven Lee Jr. all made two tackles each. 

For the EWU special teams, Soren McKee connected on a 32-yard field goal, adding two made PATs. 

Eastern Washington holds its second scrimmage next Saturday (April 25) at 11 a.m. on Roos Field. The Eagles' Spring Game is less than two weeks away on Friday, May 1, starting at 5 p.m.
