Eagles fall to Fighting Hawks in season opener

1/17/2025 2:03:00 PM

CHENEY, Wash. - EWU Men's Tennis opened their 2025 spring season in their home opener against North Dakota. The Eagles (0-1) would fall 6-1 to the Fighting Hawks (1-0), and move to 6-2 in the all-time series, dropping the last two.

To start it off in doubles, the Fighting Hawks would win two of three and get the first point of the match. The No. 2 and No. 3 teams would be a battle. The No. 3 doubles team of Drew Dillon and Brady Thomas would make it a game, but would ultimately fall 7-5 to Andrew Hayduke II and Leo Galliano.

The No. 2 doubles match would see Caden Kammerer record his first of two wins on the day with junior partner Tyler Waddock. The two would come out on top 6-4 over Ethan Terry and Jerall Yasin.

"Overall our main goal was bringing the team energy on the court which I thought we achieved really well," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "It's fun to play as part of a team in an individual sport, which I thought was fun and competitive. It was great to get the win in the No. 2 doubles match and get really close in that No. 3 match. There were just a couple shots here and there that made the difference."

In the singles, junior Tyler Waddock would represent the Eagles in the No. 1 slot. Waddock would jump out to an early lead and win the first set (6-2). Leandro Zgraggen however would battle back, steal the second set and force a third. The third would see Waddock fall behind early 0-3. Taking back the next two sets, Waddock would fight and pace the set to be down 5-4, but Zgraggen would complete the comeback and win the set 6-4.

"Waddock in the No. 1 singles played super tough in a close match against a really good player, and it just came down to the little things in the end. He brought really good energy and was super focused all the way through from start to finish," Hinson said.

Junior Tyler Dalos would battle in the No. 2 slot, despite losing the first set (6-3). Dalos would take the lead in the second set 3-2, but would fall behind 4-3 and Ange-Kevin Koua would ultimately win 6-4 in the second set.

In the No. 4 singles position, after a 6-3 first set win, Caden Kammerer would surge and take a 4-1 second set lead and cruise to win (6-2) and give the Eagles their first point in convincing fashion 6-3, 6-2 over Ethan Terry.

"I am super happy for Caden to get that win at No.4 singles, as he was pretty dominant. He had a game plan and stuck to it and knew what he had to do to win. So now, we just look to build on what we achieved today as we move into tomorrow's matches," Hinson said.
