SPOKANE, Wash. - EWU Men's Tennis opened road play in a doubleheader against Gonzaga. The Eagles (0-3) dropped both matches 4-0 to the Zags (2-0), and moved to 39-30 all-time, and 13-23 on the road against Gonzaga.
MATCH 1
Eastern would fall in the No. 1 doubles match, but would see the No. 2 doubles pairing of Tyler Waddock and Caden Kammerer cruise to a 6-2 victory over Kai-Luca Ampaw and Diego Herrera from Gonzaga. The No. 3 doubles of Drew Dillon and Brady Thomas would compete again and make it a game, but would ultimately fall 7-5 to Gus Krauel and Nicholad Reeves to give the Bulldogs the point.
"Overall, I was really impressed with our doubles. We came out with some great intensity, and we competed very well. We had chances in this first set of doubles, but were unable to finish it off and get that first point," head coach Dustin Hinson said.
In the singles, junior Tyler Waddock would again represent in the No. 1 singles Waddock would jump out to an early lead and win the first set 6-2. Giovanni Branchetti would battle back, and win the second set 6-2 and force a third. The third would see Branchetti take the early 2-1 lead, before the match was called.
Tyler Dalos would fall in a close first set 7-5 to Kai-Luva Ampaw in the No. 2 singles dual-match, before it being called in the second set. The No. 6 singles and No. 4 singles of Thomas and Kammerer would see Thomas lose a 7-6 tiebreaker in the first set, and Kammerer battle back in the second set to tie it 5-5 after falling in the first 6-3, before the match would be called.
MATCH 2
In doubles it would mimic the results as the first match. Eastern would fall in the No. 1 doubles match, but would see the No. 2 doubles pairing this time of Tyler Dalos and Arshjot Bhatti cruise to a 6-2 victory over Tom Dunlop and OScar Rashed from Gonzaga. The No. 3 doubles of Drew Dillon and Brady Thomas would fall 6-2 to Luca-Kai Ampaw and Diego Herrera to give the Zags the point.
For singles, Arshjot Bhatti in the No.5 singles spot would lose a tight 6-4 first set, before the second match being tied 1-1 before Gonzaga would clinch the match. No. 3 singles Drew Dillon would bounce back from a first set 6-2 defeat before the second set would finish 4-3 Jay Fairclough, before the match would be clinched.
"I know it is hard in a doubleheader. It is a lot of tennis, and a lot of matches. It was a good test this early in the season, and see what we need to work on. I thought the guys fought hard, and effort was good. We want to build on those types of things as we move forward in the season," Hinson said

Eastern Washington will finish their road trip and travel to Boise to take on Boise State and Idaho State for a doubleheader Friday, Jan. 31. The first match against the Broncos will start at 9 am, followed up by the second match against the Bengals at 12 pm.
