CHENEY, Wash. - After an impressive individual opening week,
Caden Kammerer earned Big Sky Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career announced by the conference today.
"I am super excited about Caden. He chose to come back to Eastern in his last year of eligibility, and just wanted to put his best year out there on the court. He has had a fast start and has really been focused on training, weights, and has been wanting to get in the best shape of his career. That hard work is starting to show,"Â head coach Dustin Hinson said.
Kammerer compiled a 3-1 overall record this weekend in matches against North Dakota and Gonzaga. In the season opener, Kammerer earned his first victory of the weekend in the No. 2 doubles position with teammate Tyler Waddock. Kammerer and Waddock would win 6-4 over the Fighting Hawks No. 2 doubles. Kammerer would continue his success and bring it to his singles match. From the No.4 position, Kammerer would cruise to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ethan Terry for his second victory of the day.
"He has been playing both singles and doubles, with some great doubles victories this last weekend," Hinson said. "It was exciting to see him and Waddock team up against a couple of really tough teams. He played really well in that singles win in pretty dominant fashion."Â
The next day, the Eagles and Kammerer would travel to Spokane to take on Gonzaga in a doubleheader. In the first match from the No. 2 doubles position, again with teammate Waddock, The two would cruise to another doubles win. This time in a dominating 6-2 decision over Zags No. 2 doubles Kai-Luca Ampaw/Diego Herrera.Â
"It was also cool to see him compete against Gonzaga in doubles, and was really competing hard. I am very excited about the start of the season for him, and looking forward to pushing him the rest of the season as we move into conference play," Hinson said.
The Longmont, Colorado native would finish the weekend 1-0 in single dual-matches, and 2-1 in doubles dual-matches.
The Eagles have a week off before heading back on the road. Eastern Washington (0-3) will travel to Boise to face off against Boise State (1-0) and Idaho State (0-0). Eastern will face both opponents in a doubleheader Friday, Jan. 31. They will take on the Broncos at 9 am, and then the Bengals immediately after at 12 pm.
