GAME PREVIEW: Back on the road, Eagles look to extend win streak

Eastern Washington travels to play Weber State on Saturday

CHENEY, Wash.  — The script has flipped since Eastern Washington football was last on the road, as the team is on a two-game winning streak. Eastern now travels to Ogden, Utah to play Weber State on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff for the game will be at 12 p.m. Pacific Time and 1 p.m. Mountain. 

The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can listen to the game live on 700 ESPN and the Varsity App with the voices of the Eagles, Larry Weir and Paul Sorensen. 


Eastern goes into the game with a 2-1 record in the Big Sky and 3-4 overall. Weber St. is 1-2 in conference and 3-4 overall


Last Time Out

Eastern Washington was rested off their bye week and defended Roos Field once again, defeating Idaho 21-14. It was EWU's first win over Idaho since the 2021 season. The game opened in a defensive battle, but Eastern scored first on a Soren McKee-field goal. The Vandals then struck back quick with a touchdown and led 7-3 after the first quarter. The Eagles then rattled off 10-straight points to take a 13-7 lead into halftime. Nate Bell connected with Miles Williams for the 9-yard touchdown. The third quarter had no scoring, but Eastern was on the move to begin the fourth. Driving down the field, Bell connected with Williams for a 6-yard score. The Eagles then went for 2, as Bell found Jaxon Branch for the conversion. The Vandals scored late but EWU's defenses prevented any further damage and held on for the win. 


Eastern's defense allowed a season low in points, while Bell led the team in rushing (134) and passing yards (177), throwing the two touchdowns to Williams. Drew Carter, Trevor Thurman and Myles Mayovsky each had seven tackles in the game to lead the Eagles. 


On the Road Against the Wildcats

Eastern Washington has the edge against Weber State in program history, leading the series 20-18. EWU carries a 8-10 record against the Wildcats in Ogden and is 12-8 in Cheney. The Eagles won the most recent matchup in 2023, but Weber had previously won four-straight matchups. In the '23 matchup, Eastern won 31-24 on homecoming over the Wildcats in a back-and-forth game. Weber took the lead in the fourth quarter, but Eastern scored 2 touchdowns in the quarter to get the win. Tuna Altahir finished with 127 all-purpose yards and scored 2 touchdowns to lead the Eagle win. Jared Taylor rushed for 79 yards and 1 touchdown, while Kekoa Visperas passed for 228 yards. 

Game No. 100 for Coach

Saturday's game against Weber St. will be Aaron Best's 100th game as head coach. He has a 55-44 record leading the Eagles and is in his 9th season at the helm of the Eagles. In his 29 years at Eastern, the program has a 214-128 record. Best played 4 years as an Eagle, followed by 16 years as an assistant coach before taking over the head job in the 2017 season. This past week, Best earned his 12th victory against a ranked opponent in his career, defeating No. 24 Idaho , 21-14. It was EWU's first win over Idaho since 2021. 

Picked Again

The Eagles have recorded an interception in 5 consecutive games, matching longest streak since 2023 when they had interceptions in 5 consecutive games (9/9/23-10/14/23). Jaylon Jenkins extended the streak for the second consecutive week with an interception against Idaho. He originally started the streak against Northern Iowa earlier in the season in what was his first career interception. Dre Greeley helped the streak with his first career interception against Western Illinois, returning it 46 yards to the WIU 4-yard line and setting up an EWU touchdown. Ambrose Marsh made his first career interception against Montana State to keep the streak alive. In the Big Sky, Eastern is tied for 5th with 5 interceptions this season, ranking 55th in the FCS.

Not Breaking the Fourth Wall

In the win over Idaho, EWU's defense made 4 stops on 4th down, with the Vandals going 1-of-5(20%) on 4th down conversions in the game. The 4 stops are the most since Nov. 9, 2019 against Idaho State when Eastern held the Bengals to 0-of-4. The Eagles lead the Big Sky and rank 45th in the FCS in 4th down conversion defense, allowing opponents a 47.% conversion rate. 

Defense Rising

The Eagle defense allowed a season-low 14 points and 338 total yards, including a season-low 191 passing yards, against Idaho this past Saturday. It was the second game this season Eastern has held an opponent to under 20 points in a game (9/13 vs. Northern Iowa). The 14 points is the fewest allowed in a game since 2023, when EWU defeated Cal Poly, 48-13 on Roos Field. 

The Bell Score

Nate Bell leads the charge in scoring for Eastern, scoring for 7 total touchdowns - all rushing. He has thrown 5 touchdown passes and converted 3, two-point conversions, all passing. Bell has scored 48 points this season, tying for 6th in the Big Sky. He is tied for 2nd in the conference in touchdowns scored. This season, Bell has accounted for multiple touchdowns in 5 of 7 games. This season, Bell has rushed for 619 yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. His rush yards ranks 2nd in the Big Sky and 19th in the FCS, while his yards per carry is also 2nd in the conference and 14th in the nation. Bell has posted 100+ yard games in two consecutive matchups. He put up 134 yards on a career-high 23 carries against Idaho. In addition, Bell has passed for 795 yards on 51.5, while completing 51.5% of his passes.
