Eagles record first win of the season over Warriors

2/28/2025 5:25:00 PM

LEWISTON, ID - EWU (1-9) secured their first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Lewis and Clark State (3-5).

EWU Tennis and Lewis-Clark State met for the 30th time, with the Eagles moving to 14-16 all-time against the Warriors. Eastern has now won the last nine meetings.

With the win, the Eagles recorded their first victory since the 2023 season when they defeated William Jessup 6-1 in Rocklin, California.

In doubles, Eastern would run the same lineup for the fourth match in a row. The Warriors would however win the doubles point, winning two of the three dual matches.

Eastern's No. 1 doubles match of Tyler Dalos/Caden Kammerer would go the distance. The Warriors were able to pull out a narrow 7-6 (13-11) victory over the Eagles.

In the No. 2 doubles, Tyler Waddock/Drew Dillon pulled out the victory over Gautam Balakrishnan/Nell Rollin 6-4. The duo would win their second doubles dual match of the season, with Waddock winning the sixth of his career and Dillon earning his 14th doubles dual-match of his career.

No. 3 doubles Arshjot Bhatti/Brady Thomas were unable to defeat Alvaro Camino/Austin Swing from the Warriors, as they would fall 6-1.

"It was a really competitive match. We definitely wanted to face a fighting team, which we did which was awesome. Doubles was definitely a slower start for us. We got behind early in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but we did battle back and had a really good fight all the way through the tiebreaker. It was super close and lost a few match points, so it was a battle," head coach Dustin Hinson said.

For singles, the Eagles would run the same lineup as they have all season. Tyler Waddock would represent the Eagles in the No. 1 position. Waddock would cruise to a 6-1 first set win, and grind out a 7-5 second set to earn his second singles dual-match of the season, and the fifth of his career.

Tyler Dalos in the No. 2 singles position won a tight first set 7-5, but was able to dominate in the second set 6-0 and earn his first singles dual-match victory of the season. This would be the sixth singles career victory for Dalos.

Drew Dillon would win a three set singles dual-match in the No. 3 position 6-3, 4-6, and 6-4. With the victory, Dillon recorded the second win of the season and the ninth of his career.

Caden Kammerer would represent the Eagles in the No. 4 position. Kammerer would be able to win his sets in great fashion 6-2 and 6-4 for his third singles dual-match win of the season, and the seventh of his Eagle career.

In the No. 5 position, Arshjot Bhatti would win the first set 6-3. In the second, after falling behind 1-0, Bhatti would rattle off three games in a row to take the 3-1 lead. Gautam Balakrishnan would respond and win four games in a row. Bhatti would be able to answer the call again and win four straight, but Balakrishnan would win one back and make it 6-6. Bhatti however fell in a wild second set with Gautam Balakrishnan winning 7-6 (7-3). In the tiebreaker, Bhatti would win 1-0 (10-6) to conclude a very competitive match and secure his second victory of the season and the fourth of his career.

"I am really proud of the guys for fighting regardless of whether they won or lost. I wanted to have them out there competing with the desire and fight no matter what the score was on every point. It was a great battle, good tennis, super fun and I'm happy for the guys to pick up the win today," Hinson said.
