Vandals take conference opener over Eagles

3/7/2025 7:44:00 PM

MOSCOW, Idaho - EWU (3-10, 0-1) was unable to extend their win streak to four, as the Eagles fell 6-1 in Moscow against Idaho (6-5, 1-0).

Eastern and Idaho met for the 47th time in series history, with the Vandals winning the last seven matches. This was the second meeting between the two schools, as the two teams met on Feb. 14 in a non-conference 7-0 victory for the Vandals.

"We fought hard, but you got to give credit to Idaho for playing well. They are a tough team, but we know we will be ready for the next one and defend our home courts against the Vikings Sunday," head coach Dustin Hinson said.

For EWU, they would mix up No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but would be unable to snag a match and lose 6-2, 6-3, and 6-3 respectively.

Tyler Waddock would represent the Eagles in the No. 1 position and look to avenge his three-set loss in February against Francisco Gay. The first set would see both Waddock and Francisco Gay from Idaho alternate leads until a 4-4 tie. Neither would be able clinch the set, so it would go to a seven-point tiebreaker to decide the set. Gay jumped out to a 5-1 lead and would carry the momentum to a 7-2 win and take the first set 7-6. The second saw Waddock jump to a 2-0 lead, as he was able to use that to win 6-4 and force a tiebreaker. Waddock would complete the comeback and win handily 10-5 in the tiebreaker for his first career Big Sky singles dual-match.With the victory, Waddock recorded a win in his fourth straight match, his fifth win of the season, and the eighth singles dual-match win of his career.

"Super happy for Tyler as he came out and played really well and smart to pull that match out. It was the fourth time he had faced off against him, and it was awesome to see Tyler get that win," Hinson said.

Tyler Dalos in the No. 2 singles position would be unable to gain his footing in a 6-1 first set loss. Dalos would compete hard and bounce back in the second set to tie it 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. He would be unable to force a third set and fall 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

Caden Kammerer would represent the Eagles in the No. 3 position for the second time this season. Sebastian Medica would come away in straight sets with a victory and drop to 1-1 in No. 3 singles, and snap Kammerer's four match win streak.

The senior Drew Dillon would be in the No. 4 position for the Eagles for the first time this season. Dillon would be able to control the early part of the first set with a 3-1 lead. Yu-Shun Lai  from Idaho was able to flip the script and win five of the next seven games to win the first set 6-4. Lai controlled the second set and won 6-2 to win in straight sets.

In the No. 5 position, Arshjot Bhatti fell behind 4-1 quickly in the first set. He would be able to grind and win four out of the next five games to even it 5-5. Gabriel Moroder from the Vandals would squeak out a 7-5 first set and outlast Bhatti's comeback. Moroder would finish the match in straight sets with a 6-0 victory

Senior Brady Thomas saw a 2-0 first set deficit in the No. 6 position for the Eagles. Thomas responded with two of his own to tie it 2-2, but Wang would be able to rally four straight games and take the first set 6-2. Wang would close the match out with a 6-1 second set win over Thomas, and clinch the Vandals sixth point of the match.
