CHENEY, Wash. — January is about to end, but Eastern Washington athletics is staying busy as the calendar changes. Men's and Women's basketball both travel to Flagstaff on Thursday for a double-header against Northern Arizona. The teams split paths on Saturday against Northern Colorado, with the women playing at home and the men on the road. Following a big weekend in Moscow, Track and Field is in Spokane this Saturday for the Inland Northwest Invite. Women's tennis has a pair of non-conference neutral matches this week, with one in Spokane and one in Pullman.

Eastern split its schedule this week with a road and home game, starting with the road matchup against Northern Arizona on Thursday. The game will be a double header with the men's game to follow immediately after in Flagstaff. The Eagles then return home on Saturday to play Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. on Reese Court. Both games are streamed live on ESPN+.
This past week, Eastern went 1-1 on its road games, and its record in the Big Sky sits at 3-4 and 10-10 overall. EWU defeated Portland State, 81-63 on Thursday, followed by a tough,
61-54 loss to Sacramento State on Saturday. Facing the Vikings, the Eagles put together a complete game for the double-digit win, pulling down 58 rebounds, and posting a 31-rebounding advantage over PSU. The team had 23 on the offensive rebounds that led to 23 second-chance points. Four Eagles scored in double figures led by 21 points from
Elyn Bowers.
Kourtney Grossman led the rebounding effort with 13 in the game.
EWU was locked in a defensive battle with the Hornets, with neither team finding consistent offense. Sac. St. managed to pull ahead in the first half and maintain their advantage throughout the second. Ella Gallatin scored a team-high 17 points with Bowers adding 14.
Between the two games, Bowers averaged 17.5 points on 44.8 percent shooting from the floor. The true freshman is second on the team with 13.9 points per game and shooting 40.9 percent to tie for the team lead. Bowers is tied for ninth in the Big Sky in scoring and field goal percentage.
Grossman added two more double-doubles on the road, averaging 14.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, while shooting at a 52.2 percent clip. The Billings, Mont. native is second in the NCAA with 13.1 rebounds and 4th with 13 double-doubles. Grossman adds 13.1 points per game that ranks 13th in the Big Sky.
Men's Basketball - at Northern Arizona (Thursday, Jan. 29 5 pm PT), at Northern Colorado (Saturday, Jan. 31 at1 pm PT)
The Eagles will head out on the road to face Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 5 p.m. PT, before traveling to Greeley, Colo., to take on Northern Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. PT. Isaiah Moses leads the Big Sky in free throw percentage and ranks fourth nationally at 94.19 percent, while also sitting third in the conference in scoring. Kiree Huie continues to anchor the defense, ranking second in the league in blocked shots at 1.30 per game.
Eastern Washington is 45–41 all-time against Northern Arizona but has dropped four straight to the Lumberjacks. The Eagles are 21–17 all-time against Northern Colorado and enter the matchup looking to snap a two-game losing streak against the Bears.
Eastern Washington dropped a tight 65–61 decision at Portland State after mounting a strong second-half comeback.
Isaiah Moses led the Eagles with 22 points and went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free-throw line, extending his streak to 48 consecutive makes, while
Alton Hamilton IV added 13 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Kiree Huie anchored the defense with four blocks as EWU erased a double-digit deficit and tied the game late, but Portland State's rebounding and timely scoring proved decisive down the stretch.
The Eagles bounced back with a 75–67 road win over Sacramento State, leaning on defensive consistency and balanced scoring. Huie paced Eastern with 16 points, followed by
Tyler Powell with 14, Moses with 13, and Hamilton IV with 11. Eastern held the Hornets under 70 points, controlled the glass, forced 12 turnovers, and shared the ball effectively with 16 assists. After building a halftime lead, the Eagles maintained control throughout the second half and closed out the win at the free-throw line to continue building momentum in conference play.
Track and Field - at Inland Northwest Invite (Saturday, Jan. 31 All-Day at The Podium)
Eastern Washington returns to The Podium for its fourth indoor meet of the season, hosting the Inland Northwest Invite on Saturday, Jan. 31. Competition begins at 9 a.m. with the women's weight throw as the Eagles look to build on last weekend's momentum.
Several Eagles enter the meet among the Big Sky leaders. On the women's side, Suzi Woodall leads the conference in the pole vault following her win at the Lauren McClusky Memorial, while Melia Middleton ranks fourth in the 400 meters, Ella Seelhoff sits fourth in the pentathlon, and the 4x400 relay is fifth. The men are paced by conference leaders Maddy Shekhawat in the 60-meter hurdles, Alex Blecha in the pole vault, and Merci Migani in the long jump, with Pry'nce Millman ranking second in the heptathlon. Migani also stands third in the triple jump, while Nic Cunningham ranks fifth.
Eastern is coming off a strong showing at the Lauren McClusky Memorial, where the Eagles posted 21 personal records and 15 additions to the program's all-time lists. The women led the effort with 14 PRs and 12 all-time marks, highlighted by
Diana Fernandez breaking her own school record while winning the 600 meters. Additional highlights included Seelhoff moving to fourth all-time in the pentathlon, Millman finishing second in the heptathlon, and Blecha climbing to third all-time in the pole vault as Eastern heads into another home meet with confidence.
Women's Tennis - vs. Colorado State (Friday, Jan. 30 at 4 pm), vs. Fresno State (Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 pm)
EWU has two neutral site matches this week close to Cheney, as they face a pair of Mountain West, future Pac 12, opponents. The Eagles start against Colorado State on Friday in Spokane and then drive south to play Fresno State on Saturday in Pullman.
The Eagles are 1-1 after the first two weeks of the season.
Eastern earned its first win of the season on Saturday against Lewis-Clark State College, defeating the Warriors, 6-1. EWU opened the match sweeping doubles to take the 1-0 lead. Three wins to singles clinched the match for Eastern and they padded the win with two more singles' victories.
Anait Arutiunian, playing at No. 1, secured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cheludo Monnayoo. She also partnered with
Sara Vasic in No. 2 doubles, sweeping Ana Gova and Carisa Liebenberg, 6-0.
Leandra Nizetic had a commanding win at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Rayana Shah. Nizetic battled with
Maria Lopez at No. 3 doubles, ultimately winning 7-5 against Shah and Sonam Dorji.
The Eagles also hosted Calgary for an exhibition match last week, sweeping the Dinos 7-0. EWU won all three doubles matches, with none going more than eight games. In singles, Eastern dropped only 13 games across the six matches.
