Wildcats drop Eagles in OT

Eastern Washington missed the game-tying shot as time expired

OGDEN, Utah — The game needed overtime and it still came down to the wire for Eastern Washington women's basketball, but they ended up on the wrong side of the result. Eastern fell to Weber State, 74-72, on Saturday afternoon in a highly-contested matchup. EWU is now 5-8 in the Big Sky and 12-14 overall. Weber St. improves to 2-12 in conference and 8-19 for the season. 

The game was back-and-fourth, with neither team holding a big lead for an extended period of time. There were 13 lead changes and 10 ties between the Wildcats and Eagles. 

After tying at 64 at the end of regulation, Weber St. managed to take and hold the lead, despite a last-second shot attempt from Eastern. 

Weber St. made 13 threes in the game and shot 45.0 percent overall. EWU carried a 35.8 percentage overall and made nine threes. 

Ella Gallatin poured in a new career-best 26 points on 9–of-16(56.3%) shooting, including 4-of-7(57.1%) on three-point shots. Kourtney Grossman finished with 12 points and Jaecy Eggers added 11.

Early in the game, Weber took advantage of its home court and led 9-4. The Eagles countered with a 6-0 run, led by four points from Ella Gallatin. The teams then settled into trading baskets for the rest of the quarter. Jaecy Eggers provided four points for EWU to keep pace with the Wildcats. After the first quarter, Eastern trailed 16-14, shooting only 27.8 percent for the quarter. 

Weber was on fire to start the second quarter, blitzing the Eagles with a 11-0 run to go up by double-digits at 27-16. Gallatin kept EWU in the game, scoring five points to help trim the lead down. Eggers also continued to be effective scoring with five points. The Wildcat lead was down to 35-31 at 1:18. Bella Hays worked inside to score a layup and the deficit was down to a pair. Madeline Gibbs then connected from three to put Eastern up 36-35 as the teams went to halftime. The Eagles improved their shooting to 44.4 percent in the second quarter. 

Beginning in the third, Weber took back the lead and went up 41-39 at the 5:50 mark of the quarter. EWU again had a response, ripping off a 9-0 run to lead 38-41 with under a minute to play. Elyn Bowers led the way with four points during the run. Eastern recorded a 30.8 shooting percentage in the third.

Now in the fourth, the Wildcats tied the game at 48 and eventually took the lead, 52-50 with 6:26 remaining in the game. Eastern then used threes from Grossman and Caitie Gingras to go back in front, 58-57. The Eagles managed to keep push the lead to 64-61 and 1:33 remaining. Weber made a three to tie the game. At the end of regulation, the Wildcats had a chance, but could not get the shot off in time. EWU carried a 46.2 shooting percentage in the fourth.

The teams needed extra time to decide and Weber started quickly with a three to take the early 67-64 lead. Gallatin made two more free throws to answer right back for Eastern. Another three from the Wildcats extended the lead to four. Grossman got inside for a layup and it was a one-possession game. Weber would hold a 74-70 lead, but Gallatin tacked on two more free throws to give the Eagles a chance. They managed to force a Wildcat turnover and had the ball down two and four seconds remaining. EWU missed on the game-tying layup and Weber earned the home win.

  • Ella Gallatin notched her 6th 20-point game of the season and has 8 for her career. It was her 22nd game scoring in double figures. 
  • Jaecy Eggers posted her 5th career double-double, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. double-digit rebounds for the 6th game this season. 
  • Eastern won the rebounding battle, 44 to 33. The teams were tied scoring in the paint, both with 26 points apiece. EWU also had 15 offensive rebounds, scoring 14 points on second-chance opportunities. 
  • Kourtney Grossman scored in double figures for the 22nd time this season and she has 42 total in her Eagle career. 
  • Both teams committed 19 turnovers, but Weber St. scored 22 points off mistakes while Eastern scored only 12. 
  • Eggers tallied 2 blocks against the Wildcats, giving her 13 games this season with 2+ blocks and 22 for her career. 
  • Weber led for 22:36 minutes as Eastern held the lead for 14:51 minutes.

Eastern Washington returns home for two games next week, starting with Sacramento State on Thursday (Feb. 19) for Kids Day at 11 a.m. EWU then plays Portland State on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 2 p.m. The game will also be the team's Play4Kay game.
