CHENEY, Wash. — It's a new week but Eastern Washington athletics continues to be busy. Following a sweep of the Montana schools, men's basketball is back at Reese Court looking to extend its winnings streak. Women's basketball travels east for two tough conference matchups. Track and Field will travel to two different spots for two meets this weekend, with one in Seattle and one in Spokane. Women's tennis stays close to home for a match on Friday, before a match on Sunday.
Men's Basketball - vs Idaho State (Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6 pm), vs Weber State (Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 pm)
The Eagles return home after completing a Treasure State sweep, defeating Montana 82–74 and Montana State 72–71 this past weekend. It marks Eastern's first sweep of the Montana schools since 2022 and makes EWU the first Big Sky program to accomplish the feat since Northern Colorado in January 2025. Eastern now turns its attention to a two-game homestand, hosting Idaho State on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. for Residential Hall Night, before welcoming Weber State on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.
Isaiah Moses continues to rank among the Big Sky's best, leading the conference in free throw percentage at 92.5 percent while sitting fifth in scoring and eighth in assists. He also ranks seventh nationally in free throw shooting. Kiree Huie has been equally efficient, ranking second in the conference in field goal percentage at 54 percent and third in blocked shots at 1.13 per game.
Eastern Washington opened the road trip with an 82–74 win at Montana on Thursday, snapping the Grizzlies' 11-game home conference winning streak. The Eagles placed five players in double figures and relied on balanced scoring and depth, totaling 32 bench points. EWU shot 52 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range while forcing 17 turnovers. Trailing by two at halftime in a physical, back-and-forth contest, Eastern pulled away late with timely perimeter shooting, strong rebounding, and poised execution down the stretch.
The Eagles capped the sweep on Saturday with a dramatic 72–71 victory at Montana State, rallying from a late seven-point deficit to secure the one-point win. Eastern shot 48 percent from the field and an impressive 56 percent from beyond the arc while holding a plus-12 advantage on the glass and receiving scoring contributions from nearly the entire rotation. After weathering a second-half Bobcat run, the Eagles closed with clutch baskets, defensive stops, and composure in the final minute to secure the sweep and reinforce their toughness on the road.
Women's Basketball - at Idaho State (Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6 pm Pacific Time), at Weber State (Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 pm Pacific Time)
It's road trip time for Eastern as they travel for two games this week. EWU will be in Pocatello to play Idaho State on Thursday and in Ogden, Utah on Saturday to face Weber State. This will be the second meeting for the Eagles against the two teams this season.
EWU is 5-6 in the Big Sky and 12-12 this season with seven games remaining before the Big Sky Tournament.
The Eagles split home games this past week, and started with a 76-72 win over Montana. The team then dropped a heartbreaker against
Montana State, 71-69 despite a second-half rally from Eastern. EWU started fast against Montana leading by eight after the first quarter, but the Griz stayed close and cut the lead down to a possession in the final minute. The Eagles made their free throws to secure the win.
Kourtney Grossman posted her 15th double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
In the game against the Bobcats, Eastern trailed by double-digits after the first quarter and trailed by as much as 19 in the first half. The second half was a different story as the Eagles cut the deficit down to three after the third quarter, out-scoring MSU 25 to 14. In the fourth quarter, EWU took the lead with 1:22 remaining on a layup from Elyn Bowers. The Bobcats managed to convert three free throws down the stretch to prevent the Eagle comeback from being complete. Ella Gallatin scored a game-high 18 points.
The defense for Eastern is effective at disrupting opponents' shooting. EWU allowed its opponents to shoot 39.3 percent, the fourth-lowest mark in the conference. Against the three, the Eagles allow a 29.5 percentage, also ranking fourth in the Big Sky.
Grossman brings steady dominance in the paint this season, averaging 13.1 rebounds per game. The stat ranks third in the NCAA and leads the Big Sky. Her 10.2 defensive rebounds per game leads the nation. Grossman adds 13.6 points per game, which ties for 12th in the conference. The Billings, Mont. native has earned 15 double-doubles this season, sixth-most in the NCAA and leads the Big Sky.
The scoring for the Eagles distributes well, with Bowers leading the team with 14.8 points per game, also ranking fifth in the conference. Gallatin provides another threat, averaging 14.4 points per game to rank seventh.
Track and Field - at Husky Classic (Friday, Feb. 13 - Saturday, Feb. 14 All Day), at Whitworth Indoor Invite (Friday, Feb. 13 - Saturday, Feb. 14 All Day)
Eastern will split its squads for the second consecutive week, with one group traveling to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic and the other remaining in Spokane for the Whitworth Indoor Invite at The Podium. Both meets will run all day on Friday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 14, as the Eagles continue to sharpen their form heading into championship season.
'Several Eagles currently rank among the Big Sky Conference's top performers. Suzi Woodall leads the league in the pole vault and is the only Eagle ranked inside the NCAA top 50, sitting at No. 29 nationally. Jordyn Grady ranks fourth in the 60m hurdles, while Ella Seelhoff sits fourth in the pentathlon. Judith Koumedzina is second in the 200m and fifth in the 60m. On the men's side, Maddy Shekhawat leads the conference in the 60m hurdles, Alex Blecha is second in the pole vault, and Pry'nce Millman ranks fourth in the heptathlon. Merci Migani also paces the Big Sky in the long jump and sits fourth in the triple jump.
The Eagles are coming off a strong split-squad weekend at the Riverfront Invite & Multis at The Podium and the Idaho Team Challenge in Moscow, Idaho, where they produced a wave of personal bests, season bests, and all-time program marks. At The Podium, Ella Seelhoff posted a fifth-place finish in the pentathlon, highlighted by a third-place performance in the 800m. Jordyn Grady delivered an impressive EWU debut by finishing second in the 60m hurdles and moving into second all-time in program history, while Cerea Mahabeer and Sara Sanders each recorded top-five marks all-time in the 60m hurdles and 800m, respectively. Additional highlights included a pole vault victory from Suzi Woodall, a second-place finish in the 600m by Lexi Meyer, strong relay performances, and personal bests from Henry Nelson and Marcus Lemon on the men's side.
In Moscow, the jumpers and throwers continued the momentum with several standout performances. Merci Migani won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump, while Nic Cunningham recorded a personal best in the long jump. Jason Nwaka led the throws with a runner-up finish in the shot put, supported by multiple top-five finishes and personal bests across the group. On the women's side, Manthita Wague moved into fourth all-time in program history in the long jump, with Shai Gray also cracking the top 10 all-time. Podium finishes in the high jump and triple jump capped a balanced and productive weekend as the Eagles turn their focus to closing out the regular season strong.
Women's Tennis - at Whitworth (Friday, Feb. 12 at 1 pm), vs. Utah State (Sunday, Feb. 16 at 10 am) - Free Admission
Eastern Washington has two matches this week, with one at home and one away. The Eagles travel to Spokane to Whitworth on Friday before returning home on Sunday to host Utah State. Friday's match starts at 5 p.m. and Sunday will be a 10 am start.
EWU went 2-0 this past weekend in San Antonio, defeating St. Mary's University 5-2 and
Incarnate Word 4-2. The Eagles started against the Rattlers by winning the doubles points, followed by four wins in singles.
Leandra Nizetic dominated at No. 2 singles and earned a doubles win to help power the win. Against the Cardinals, Eastern battled to the doubles point, with
Anait Arutiunian and
Sara Vasic winning the tiebreaker to clinch the point. EWU then won three singles matches, with Nizetic delivering the match-clinching point at No. 2 in a three-set battle. Nizetic went a perfect 4-0 in matches this past week.
