Men's Tennis Loses in a Heartbreaking Match Against Montana

The Eagles will close out the regular season tomorrow against Montana State at 3 p.m. in Cheney

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team fell 4-3 to the University of Montana in a nail-biting finish today (April 15). The Eagles now have a 6-4 conference record and are 11-9 overall.

"In short, this was probably one of the toughest losses in my time here," head coach Steve Clark said. "It was tough because we had a match point, but more importantly because we did not compete in a few places -- which is contrary to our philosophy. We have our last match tomorrow and need to write the ship big time."

In singles, senior Robert Dula started off the team with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over his opponent in the No. 1 spot. Junior Scott Paz was the other Eagle to claim a victory on the singles side of the competition in the No. 3 spot. Paz defeated his opponent in three sets with scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Towards the end of the competition and the team score tied at three, the last match was junior Flavien Raveau in the No. 4 spot. Raveau's match could not have been any closer as it went to three sets and a tiebreaker. He won his first set 6-3, but lost his second set 5-7. The third set eventually went to 6-6 and went to a tiebreaker. Montana won the tiebreaker 10-8, making the Grizzlies the winners of the match.

"Rob, Scott and Flavien gave everything they had," Clark added.

Junior Victor Pereira fell in the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 5 spot, senior Wacil Bendjelti fell 7-5, 6-4 to his opponent. Finishing off the singles competition was junior Ricardo Almeida who lost 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles, EWU dominated in two of the three matches. In the first spot was Dula and Pereira who won 6-3. In the second spot was Paz and Raveau who won 6-1. Rounding off the doubles was the No. 3 team who was Almeida and Bendjelti, where they lost a close 6-4 match.

The Eagles will continue competition tomorrow as they play Montana State at home. This will be the last match of the regular season before the Big Sky Championships. Matches will begin at 3 p.m.
