Men's Tennis Close Out Regular Season with a Loss to Montana State

The Eagles will have to wait for results around the league next week to see if they earn a bid to the Big Sky Championships

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team fell 4-3 in a battle against Montana State today (April 16) to close out the regular season. With this loss, the Eagles are currently in seventh place in the Big Sky standings with a 6-5 conference record. The team will have to wait for results to come in next weekend to see if they earned a bid into the tournament.

"We played the worst double we have played all year," head coach Steve Clark said. "It was apparent that some guys were not able to recover from the tough loss yesterday and that is just not mentally strong -- so that cost us."

Senior Robert Dula went undefeated in singles this weekend as he defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot. Junior Scott Paz also went undefeated in singles this weekend as he won 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot. The other Eagle to win a singles match was junior Ricardo Almeida, winning 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot.

In the second spot, junior Victor Pereira fell to his opponent 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 4 spot was Flavien Raveau who fell 6-1, 6-4. In the No. 5 spot, senior Wacil Bendjelti had a three set battle before falling to his opponent 4-6, 6-0, 3-6.

In doubles, Dula and Pereira were the only team to collect a win today as they won 6-2 in the No. 1 spot. In the second spot, Paz and Raveau lost 6-3. Finishing off doubles was Almeida and Bendjelti who fell 6-3 to their opponents.

"There is a rule in martial arts that I train in (Soo Bahk Do Moo Du Kwan) if you make one mistake don't make two -- or it will cost you greatly," Clark added. "Well today some of the guys let yesterday's close loss bother them and it cost the team another loss."

Even though the dual season may be over, Eastern will compete in the Ojai Tennis Tournament next week in California on April 20-23. The Eagles close out the dual season with a 6-5 conference record and 11-10 overall.
