Men's Tennis Fights a Hard Battle Before Falling to Northern Arizona

The Eagles fall 7-0 to NAU, who is in first place in the Big Sky and is undefeated on their home courts

The Eastern Washington University's men's tennis team had close battles throughout the whole match, but still fell to Northern Arizona by a team score of 7-0 today (April 9). The Eagles went 1-1 on the weekend and is now 6-2 in the Big Sky conference, sitting in second place with Idaho.

"It was a battle of breaks," head coach Steve Clark said. "We lost by a break in doubles and also by a break in every match except No. 4 and 5. We had some leads let go and it is just tough here at the high altitude. There has been only one conference team to beat NAU at home in a long time."

In the No. 1 singles, senior Robert Dula lost in a close match. He lost his first set 2-6, but came back and won his first set 7-6. He ended up losing the match in a 5-10 tiebreaker. The second singles was junior Victor Pereira where he fell 7-5, 6-4 to his opponent. In the No. 3 spot was junior Scott Paz who lost his first set by a close 7-6 match, and went on to lose his second set 6-3. Junior Flavien Raveau competed in the No. 4 spot and lost 7-5, 6-4 to his opponent.

Finishing off singles were senior Wacil Bendjelti who lost 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot and junior Ricardo Almeida who lost 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot.

In doubles, Dula and Pereira teamed up and lost 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Paz and Raveau competed as the No. 2 spot, but did not finish the match. Finishing off doubles composition was Bendjelti and Almeida competing in the No. 3 spot where they also lost 6-3.

"Our goal is to have a shot at them (NAU) at low altitude at conference but in the meantime some guys we have to work in some areas still, they seem to let the foot off the gas. The guys know it is a matter of executing at any altitude and finding ways to adjust and then the match is different, just reversing a few points here and there. Our one percent rule is still in affect. Time to prepare for the next three matches. Go Eags."

The Eagles next three matches will be at home. The first competition will be against Idaho with matches starting at 3 p.m. on April 12.
