EWU Men’s Tennis Begins Regular Season against Washington

The Eagles open up the regular season in Seattle

LIVE STATS & VIDEO

CHENEY, Wash. –
The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team looks forward to opening up the regular season in Seattle this weekend (Jan. 13) against the University of Washington.

"I'm looking forward to this season and so are the guys. We are dealing with injuries right now, but it gives everybody a chance to step up and see what they can do," said head coach Steve Clark. "They hold each other accountable and they know what's acceptable and what's not, so everyone is guiding each other. Everyone is taking ownership and I'm seeing encouraging things."

Following the upcoming match, the team will play three more matches in South Carolina before their home opener on Feb. 3 with a double header starting against Seattle University and then Whitworth University later in the day. The Eagles are looking at a tough schedule as they will be opening up Big Sky Conference play against Northern Colorado on Feb. 17.

Washington finished with a 12-12 overall record during the 2016-17 campaign and finished 1-6 in Pac-12 conference play. The Huskies return All-Pac-12 Second Team selections Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart.

EWU will host a total of nine matches at home that includes Big Sky play as well as non-conference match ups such as South Carolina Upstate, The Citadel, and Coastal Carolina. The current roster for the upcoming season features nine players with a strong upperclassmen presence on the team.

"We are looking forward to seeing how the seniors do. I am really impressed with our seniors, sometimes they can feel an odd pressure to think that they have to do something really well because it's their last chance but other times I feel like they can relax a little bit more. I'm looking forward to seeing our senior leadership. Everyone is really focused and gelled right now, and that's the culture we want to create."

Eastern Washington wrapped up the 2016-17 season with a winning record in both Big Sky play (6-5) and overall (11-10). The Eagles return All-Big Sky honorable mentions from a season ago in Scott Paz and Victor Pereira.

The Eagles finished their fall season strong after competing in four tournaments on the road with many victories – leaving them with high expectations for the regular season. Paz and freshman Jeremy Mueller represented Eastern Washington at the ITA All-American in September, a national tournament featuring top-level competitors. Later on at the Dar Walters Fall Classic, Mueller went 3-1 over the weekend and freshman Martin Bats also got his first collegiate win.

"We had a solid fall and we played tough. Jeremy Mueller had a lot of good results in the fall and Jeremy Field took down one of the top players in the PAC-12, so we saw some good things," added Clark. "Martin Bats had a lot of competitive matches and if he lost, they were in three sets so he is really coming along."

At the ITA Regional Championships (Oct. 19-23), junior Jeremy Field defeated third seeded Stanford standout in three sets (2-6, 7-5, 10-6). To close the season at the Bulldog Classic, Paz and Flavien Raveau teamed up to make it to the semifinals in doubles play. Among other accomplishments, the Eagles closed the fall season having overcome obstacles that have prepared them to excel in 2018.
