CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington men's tennis team defeated Weber State at home today (Feb. 24) 4-3. The Eagles are now 6-3 overall and 2-1 in conference.
The Eagles lost the doubles point with one match going to tiebreakers. Scott Paz and Flavien Raveau teamed up on the first court and pulled out the lone win in doubles (6-3). Victor Pereira and Jeremy Field competed in the No. 2 spot but fell 6-7 (8-10), followed by Ricardo Almeida and Martin Bats who lost (5-7).
Paz opened up singles play on the first court but lost 4-6, 4-6 – only his second loss of the season since UW. Field defeated his opponent in the No. 2 spot (6-4, 6-2) followed by Raveau who won 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3). Bats played in the No. 4 spot and also found success winning (6-4, 6-3). Almeida fell 0-1, 1-6 to put the overall match in the hands of Pereira in the No. 6 spot. Pereira came away with the win in a long three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) to clinch the Eagle victory.
"Today was a great win on two counts," said head coach Steve Clark. "We had four match points at No. 2 doubles to potentially win the doubles point but we didn't manage to win it, so we had to win the match another way. It was a great win because we did it without a full lineup as Mueller is still out due to illness. The next man up had to be tough, so it was great to see Pereira pull out the deciding win. The team is very tight and it was great to see all the guys hugging Pereira at the end – They were so happy for him."
Eastern continues competition next weekend against Sacramento State (Mar. 3) and Nevada (Mar. 4). For more information on Eastern Washington's men's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
