CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington men's tennis team swept the competition at home today (Feb. 3) battling Seattle U (4-3) and Whitworth (7-0). After today's double-header the Eagles sit at 3-2 overall.
Eastern began the day against Seattle U. Scott Paz and Flavien Raveau worked together in the No. 1 doubles spot to come away with an Eagle win at 6-1, followed by Jeremy Field and Victor Pereira who found success with a win at 6-4. Ricardo Almeida and Martin Bats teamed up in the No. 3 spot to beat their opponents 6-4 and sealed the doubles point for the Eagles. Playing in the No. 4 spot, Garner Sears and Devon Kashishian fell to SU 6-7.
Paz took the No. 1 singles spot with a three-set match and came away with the win (3-6, 6-3, 6-3). Raveau played in the No. 2 spot and fell to Colton Weeldreyer of SU (4-6, 4-6), followed by Field who dominated his match (6-2, 6-1). Bats took the court at the No. 4 spot beating his opponent in three sets (6-3, 2-6, 6-4). Almeida fell to his opponent (4-6, 5-7) as well as Pereira who also lost (3-6, 2-6).
"It was a very solid win considering Jeremy Mueller – one of our key players – was out," said head coach Steve Clark in regard to the win over SU. "We were up at first 4-1, we just need to get tougher at some things."
The Eagles faced Whitworth shortly after, dominating the match 7-0. EWU swept the doubles competition, starting with Paz and Raveau as a duo at the No. 1 spot winning 6-0. Pereira and Almeida followed nicely winning 7-6 (9) as well as Field and Bats who teamed up to win 6-3.
In singles play, Raveau opened up competition at the No. 1 spot winning 6-1, 6-2. Field followed and swept his competition (6-1, 6-1) as well as Bats (6-2, 6-2). Almeida played in the No. 4 spot and dominated in two sets (6-2, 6-1) and Pereira played a long three sets to come away with the win (4-6, 6-3, 10-1). Kashishian took the Eagles home with a 6-1, 6-4 win to end the day.
"It was good for the guys who lost in the previous match to come back and win in the second," said Clark. "Kudos to Bats and Field who both had four wins, that is good for them. Now it's time to get some rest as we've got a lot of banged-up guys still."
The Eagles face Montana State tomorrow (Feb. 4) at home for a non-conference battle. Following this weekend, the Eagles will have a break before getting on the road to face Northern Colorado (Feb. 17) and North Dakota (Feb. 19).
