CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team fell to Portland State in a close match, 4-3. The squad is now 6-7 overall and 2-4 in conference.
"Today had a disappointing result, but given that we had two guys out of the lineup with injuries and multiple chances to win the match, the silver-lining is that our energy was significantly higher than the other day," said head coach Steve Clark. "We talked about various things we need to do in doubles -- our movement going after balls, partner communication and energy was way better."
The Eagles clinched the doubles point with two solid wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spot. Scott Paz and Flavien Raveau teamed up on the first court for a 6-4 victory, followed by Victor Pereira and Jeremy Field who won 7-5. Jeremy Mueller and Ricardo Almeida played a competitive match but fell 4-6.
In singles play, Paz was defeated in the No. 1 spot (4-6, 4-6). Field won in the No. 2 spot (6-3, 6-3) to make him undefeated over the weekend. Raveau lost in a long three-set match 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (5-7) followed by Mueller who also lost in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 4-6. Pereira got his second win of the day at No. 5 with a 7-5, 7-5 victory and Devon Kashishian fell in three sets (6-4, 0-6, 2-6) to end the day.
"We had some lapses which cost us at various times but some guys managed to regain momentum while others didn't," said Clark. "So we have things to improve. We have only played in a few matches this year where we haven't dealt with injuries or illness and couldn't play. We are looking forward to having couple weeks off to get ready and play some better ball."
The Eagles have a couple weeks off before they face San Diego State (Mar. 27) and California Irvine (Mar. 29) for non-conference matches. For more information on Eastern Washington's men's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and like EWU men's tennis on Facebook.
