IRVINE, Calif. – The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team dropped their match to UC Irvine today (Mar. 29), 7-0. The loss puts the Eagles at a 6-9 mark overall and 2-4 in Big Sky Conference play.
Scott Paz and Flavien Raveau teamed up on the first court but lost 1-6, followed by Victor Pereira and Jeremy Field (3-6) and Jeremy Mueller and Martin Bats (0-6).
Paz opened up singles play at the No. 1 spot but fell (0-6, 3-6). Field took his match to three long sets but couldn't get the victory (3-6, 6-4, 2-6), followed by Raveau at No. 3 (4-6, 1-6), Mueller at No. 4 (0-6, 3-6), and Pereira (0-6, 2-6). Ricardo Almeida lost (1-6, 0-6) to end the day for the Eagles.
"It was good to see many folks from Southern California at my old coaching grounds," said head coach Steve Clark. "Today I challenged the guys to ponder for a few days because for the most part we just didn't play well. Jeremy had a great match though he fell short deep in the third. Ricardo pulled it around but came up short in the second set tiebreaker."
"The guys agreed that it was not close to what we are capable of and are committed to stepping it up and draining the tank the next few weeks going into our conference schedule," said Clark. "Bottom line is if getting a wakeup call from this performance, where it should have been much closer at every position, then it will be worth it. We need to take personal inventory and 'get 'er done'."
The squad travels home to host Southern Utah (Apr. 13), Idaho State (Apr. 14) and Idaho (Apr. 18) for conference matches in two weeks. For more information on Eastern Washington's men's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
