EWU Men’s Tennis Falls to Sacramento State and Nevada in Double-Header

Scott Paz wins his No. 1 singles match against Sacramento State

SAC STATE RESULTS

NEVADA RESULTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –
The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team competed in a double header today (Mar. 4), dropping both matches against Sacramento State (1-6) and Nevada (0-7). The squad is now 6-5 overall and 2-2 in conference.

"There's an old saying -- 'when it rains it pours'", said head coach Steve Clark. "Well, it did rain and it did pour so we had to wait to play both matches on the same day which would not normally be a problem but we were pretty gassed by the second match, given our attempt to get to the airport."

After the match against Sacramento State conference match was rescheduled from Saturday (March 3) to this morning due to inclement weather, Scott Paz and Flavien Raveau opened up doubles play but fell 2-6 in the No. 1 spot. Victor Pereira and Jeremy Field got the lone doubles win (6-2) and Martin Bats and Jeremy Mueller put up a tough fight but couldn't clinch the doubles point for the Eagles (3-6).

Paz got the lone singles win for the Eagles in the No. 1 spot against Sacramento State (6-1, 6-4). Paz only has one loss in conference so far. Field followed on the second court but lost to his opponent 6-1, 7-6 (6) followed by Raveau who lost 6-1, 6-3 and Mueller (6-1, 6-0). Martin Bats competed in the No. 5 spot taking his match to three sets but coming up short (3-6, 6-4, 5-10), and Pereira followed (2-6, 2-6) to end the match.

Against Nevada, Paz and Raveau teamed up in doubles play again but fell (4-6), as well as Pereira and Field (2-6) and Almeida and Mueller (4-6) to give Nevada the doubles point.

In singles play, Paz lost to his opponent 1-6, 2-6 on the first court. Field played a tough match in the No. 2 spot, taking his second-set to a tiebreaker but fell 1-6, 6-7 (3), followed by Raveau who lost 2-6 in both sets. Mueller lost 4-6, 2-6 and Bats followed losing his first set 4-5 and being unable to finish due to injury. Almeida ended the day in the No. 6 spot and lost (5-7, 3-6).

"During our Nevada match, Bats sprained his ankle on his set point. So when it rains, it pours. Hopefully we will get healthy and get better," said Clark.

The Eagles host Northern Arizona (Mar. 10) and Portland State (Mar. 11) next weekend for more conference competition.
