CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team earned a hard-fought victory over Idaho State today (Apr. 14), 4-3. This puts the Eagles at a 7-10 mark overall and 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference.
"Today is what college tennis is supposed to be like," said head coach Steve Clark. "Both coaches shaking hands, being friendly, and complimenting each others players. Both sides were cheering for each other and it came down to a close, close match. It was great to see the freshmen clinch the match."
Scott Paz competed on the first court in singles and fell to his opponent (4-6, 4-6) before Jeremy Field tabbed the first Eagle victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over his opponent. Flavien Raveau defeated his opponent at No. 3 (7-5, 6-4) and Victor Pereira competed at No. 4 but lost in a long three sets (7-5, 4-6, 2-6). Martin Bats picked up another Eagle win defeating his opponent 4-6, 7-5, 7-5Â for the overall match point. Jeremy Mueller won at No. 6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to make it four singles wins overall for Eastern.
"Martin at No. 5 had the match point against his opponent and match point for the team and hit a big serve," said Clark. "He came back from being 4-1 down in the third set and won the match, and at the same time Jeremy Mueller was in his tiebreaker for the second set where he was up 5-1, lost five straight points and then won two more points for the match point. It was exciting to see the guys having a blast supporting each other, it was really fun."
Idaho State won the doubles point with three straight wins in doubles. Paz and Raveau teamed up at No. 1 but dropped the match 3-6, followed by Pereira and Field (2-6) and Mueller and Almeida (3-6). Eastern's four singles point gave them the overall match win.
Eastern recognized their four graduating seniors today – Ricardo Almeida, Scott Paz, Victor Pereira and Flavien Raveau – for Senior Day.
The Eagles hit the road next week to face Idaho (Apr. 18) before traveling to play Montana State (Apr. 21) and Montana (Apr. 22) next weekend.
