CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team hosting Washington today (Apr. 16) and lost 4-0. The Eagles are now 7-11 overall and 3-5 in conference.
"Though we lost the doubles point playing a bit overly energetic, our singles was extremely close," said head coach Steve Clark. "We were up in numerous first sets but UW played strongly. We lost 4-0 but at that moment Jeremy Field was up at deuce returning and UW called the match. It was a shame as Jeremy, who had taken down one of Stanford's top players in the fall, had a chance to continue his solid win record."
"Martin Bats was also up 5-4 at No. 5 before that was called as well. Scott, Flavien, and Victor all lost close one-break matches and fought hard."
Jeremy Field took the first court in singles play against nationally ranked Jake Douglas from Washington. Field's match was competitive and went unfinished (4-6, 4-5) as UW clinched the 4-0 victory with the doubles point and three straight singles wins. Field was only two points away from coming out on top.
Scott Paz competed in the No. 2 spot and fell (3-6, 3-6), followed by Flavien Raveau (4-6, 2-6) and Victor Pereira at No. 4 (4-6, 3-6). Martin Bats and Ricardo Almeida's matches also went unfinished at No. 5 and No. 6.
Washington took the doubles point with two early victories. Paz and Field teamed up against Washington standouts and lost 1-6, followed by Bats and Raveau at No. 3 (3-6). Mueller and Pereira did not finish.
"I would like to say thanks to everyone who came out to the match," said Clark. "That was by far the largest crowd at EWU – bigger than our record breaking crowd the first year I took over the program. We are so appreciative. We had to bring out two more bleachers to accommodate it. Thanks for being loud and proud. Onward and upward to finish strong. Go Eags."
The Eagles travel to face Idaho on Wednesday (Apr. 18) at 2 p.m. For more information on Eastern Washington's men's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and like EWU men's tennis on Facebook.
