CHENEY, Wash.— Jeremy Field and
Mikayel Khachatryan from the Eastern Washington University men's tennis team will be competing in the ITA All American Championships this weekend in Tulsa, Okla. The championships run from Sept. 29 to Oct. 8.
"Jeremy and Mikayel's Universal Tennis Ratings (UTR) allowed them to get in earlier than our players did last year," said head coach Steve Clark. "Jeremy has had solid wins over regionally and nationally ranked opponents in his tenure at EWU, so it will be a great opportunity for him there. Mikayel has had success at his prior school and has solid experience at a high level. He is getting his rhythm and aggressive style back as displayed in a match or two this past weekend."
The ITA All-American is a national event that hosts some of the best players in the nation at the University of Tulsa. This year's tournament marks the 14th-straight year that Tulsa acts as the tournament host. This is the fifth year the Eagles have competed at the tournament under Clark.
The tournament includes a pre-qualifying round set to begin on Sept. 29 and goes through Sept. 30, followed by a qualifying round (Oct. 1-2) and then the main draw (Oct. 4-8).
The championship matches for singles and doubles will be played on Monday, Oct. 8.
In the singles there are prequalifying, qualifying and main draws. The prequalifying draw includes 256 players, the qualifying in singles has 128 and the qualifying rounds for doubles have 64. The main draw for doubles will have 32 teams and in the singles there will be 64 players.
Eastern has had success at past ITA All-American Championships, as former Eagles
Scott Paz has picked up a win and Robert Dula advanced to the third round.
While Field and Khachatryan compete in this tournament the remaining Eagles will stay in Cheney, Wash. and get ready for their upcoming matches.
"While we are gone, volunteer assistant coaches
Ricardo Almeida and
Scott Paz will do a phenomenal job working with the team while carrying on some momentum after the best showing by the team as a whole at the EWU Classic," said Clark.
After the ITA All-American Championships, the Eagles will prepare for the ITA Regionals on Oct. 11-15.
