A year after each played in 2/3rd of a season,
Mason Peatling and
Jacob Davison are hoping for injury-free years to show what they can do for an entire campaign for the Eastern Washington University men's basketball team.
Â
Regardless of the 12 games each missed a year ago, the Big Sky Conference has taken notice and that duo are among the six players selected as preseason All-Big Sky selections, the league announced Wednesday (Oct. 16).
Â
Peatling is back for his senior season after earning second team All-Big Sky honors for the Eagles, with Davison earning third team accolades as a sophomore despite missing the last 10 games with an ankle injury. Peatling averaged 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds a year ago, while Davison averaged 15.2 per outing.
Â
"That honor is well-deserved by both players," said Eastern head coach
Shantay Legans. "Even though they each missed a dozen games last year, they are well-respected by our league. We appreciate that."
Â
Peatling was also selected to the Big Sky All-Tournament team a year ago after averaging 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds in three tourney games while sinking 62.9 percent of his shots from the field. He missed EWU's first nine games with a toe injury, and his return turned out to be the turning point of the season for the Eagles. Eastern was 15-9 the rest of the season and advanced to the Big Sky Conference Tournament championship game for a second-straight season.
Â
"Mason is coming off his first spring and summer that he has been able to work out and get better," explained Legans. "We saw what he meant to our team when he came back from his injury last season, and we expect him to be even more dominant in the league now that he's had a full year to prepare."
Â
Until his injury, Davison had averaged 18.5 points in league play, including 23.8 points in his last nine outings.
Â
"Jacob is an unbelievable talent and he's gotten tougher," said Legans. "Even when he was injured, he was in watching as much video as possible. He couldn't do anything else but learn, and it's taken him to the next level. He's a great scorer, but now he's making passes and plays he didn't make before.
Â
"He's becoming a better teammate, and is a great leader and one of our captains," Legans added. "His leadership and how he's thinking the game are going to make him hard to guard, and the more passes he makes to other players it's going to make it easier for him to score. I think he's understanding that."
Â
The other players named to the preseason team were Weber State's Jerrick Harding, Montana's Sayeed Pridgett, Montana State's Harald Frey and Portland State's Holland Woods. Harding was selected as the preseason MVP.
