Keshun McGee Adds Triple Jump Title at Big Sky Indoor Championships

Eagle men and women each take home four medals to earn All-Big Sky honors

RESULTS

Eastern Washington University junior Keshun McGee took home his second first-place medal at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Bozeman, Mont., on Saturday (Feb. 23), winning the triple jump with a jump of 51-5.

Eastern had four men's athletes and four women's athletes earn All-Big Sky Conference honors by finishing in the top three. On Friday, there were three all-conference performances (one by the men, two by the women).

"I feel we finished the indoor season in a stronger position than anticipated," said head coach Stan Kerr. "The guys fought hard in every event and know this sets us up very well for upcoming outdoor season."

"We didn't have a whole lot of bodies competing today but the athletes that competed did great," said women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg.

The men finished in fourth place with 57.50 points while the women finished in ninth with 48 points.

Men's Top Performers

Junior Keshun McGee won the long jump on Friday, then triumphed in the triple jump with a leap of 51-5. He becomes the second Eastern competitor to sweep the long jump and triple titles indoors, with Eastern Hall of Famer Kurt Kraemer claiming both in 2001.

In the sprints, sophomore Joe Gauthier placed third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83. In the 200 meters, he placed sixth with a time of 22.42. Senior Jeremy VanAssche placed fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.90.

Senior Parker Bowden placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.07. Junior Tremaine McAdams finished in fifth with a time of 49.03.

In the weight throw, sophomore Colton Kautz placed fifth with a personal-best throw of 61-7 3/4, which also moves him up to No. 6 on the EWU all-time list.

Junior Baily Aiello finished tied for third in the pole vault with a jump 15-4 1/4.

Women's Top Performers

Senior Dominique Butler placed third in the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 39-7. Her mark was a school record, breaking the previous record of 39-5 3/4 set by Morena Mannucci in 2015.

In the shot put, senior Paris Flenoy placed third in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 47-9, which moves her up to No. 3 all-time in school history. Freshman Hadassah Ward finished four spots behind Flenoy in seventh with throw of 44-9.

Other comments from head coach Marcia Mecklenburg . . .

"Dominique finished her final indoor season with a personal record, school record, and third place finish, earning a bronze medal in the triple jump. Breaking a school record in two different events at the Big Sky Championships isn't an easy thing to do. Kudos to Dom. It was a great way to put a cap on her EWU indoor career."

"Paris Flenoy also put a throw together on the final put of her senior season. She threw 47-9 for a personal record and a mark which also earned her a bronze medal. That was a great way for those two to end the season."

"Hadassah Ward was EWU women's other scorer in today's portion of the meet. She competed in her first indoor championship and as a freshman and threw a personal record and placed seventh overall."

"It was a fun, exciting meet. I am looking forward to the continued development of the freshman for next year. Outdoors, here we come"

Other comments from head coach Stan Kerr . . .

"The coaches are very proud of the team character shown in the many moments of brilliance and brokenness that happen at every track & field meet."

"Keshun's double gold medal performances in the horizontal jumps will forever be a highlight of the indoor championships."

"Colton perseverance in the weight throw paid off with a huge PR."

"Joe had a breakthrough meet with his scoring in both the 60 meters and the 200 meters. His 60-meter effort also gave him All-Conference honors."

"Parker shined again in the hurdles and narrowly missed out on making the podium."

"Tre had a great run in the 400 meters. In addition to scoring, he led off a solid leg of the 4x400."

"One of most anticipated races of the championships was the one mile run. Isaac and the rest of the field did not disappoint in delivering a sparkling race that showed why the Big Sky Conference is a national power in the distance races."

"The indoor championships always deliver moments of moments of brilliance and brokenness. We love it and can't wait to get the outdoor season going."
