Women’s Basketball Signing Class Complete with Five Newcomers

Núria Cunill, Kallie Schaplow, Tarryn Hart, Britt Van Buren and Megan Fossen join the Eagles as the final pieces to the 2020-21 roster

CHENEY, Wash. – Entering her 20th season at the helm of the Eastern Washington women's basketball program, head coach Wendy Schuller has announced five new additions to her signing class.
 
Megan Fossen, Tarryn Hart and Britt Van Buren are all transfers from the community college level and will join the Eagles as juniors, while Núria Cunill and Kallie Schaplow will be true freshmen in the fall.
 
"We can't wait to get to work with this group of newcomers. It'll be nice to actually meet a few of them in person. They bring a plethora of talent and personality to our team and fit specific needs for the class," said Schuller. "We wanted winners and we wanted quality young women. This class embodies those traits. Each of them brings a great skill set to the table and we are as anxious as they are to get started with them and the special group we have returning."
 
The five newcomers also join previously announced Aaliyah Alexander, Maisie Burnham and Bella Pedrojetti. Updates from the trio's senior seasons can also be found below.

Núria Cunill comes to Eastern Washington all the way from Berga, Spain, where she attended the Institut Guillem de Bergueda. She led her team to a Primera Catalana League championship in 2019 and averaged a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Personal: Daughter of Àngels Peña Serralvo and Josep Cunill Serra. She plans on majoring in biology with aspirations of contributing to the curing of cancer and other diseases.

Megan Fossen comes to Eastern Washington after playing two seasons at Lane Community College. Fossen is a Medford, Ore., native who prepped at North Medford High School.
 
At Lane CC, Fossen was named First Team All-Northwest Athletic Conference as a sophomore and led her team to a third-place finish at the NWAC Championships as a freshman. Fossen averaged 11 points, six rebounds and two assists per game as a freshman and improved to 12 points, six rebounds and two assists as a sophomore to go with a 48 percent field goal percentage and 30 percent from three-point range.
 
Fossen was a four-year letter winner in high school and earned one in track. She was named Player of the Year and First Team All-State for the Southwestern Conference. As a senior, she led Medford to a fifth-place finish in the OSAA state championships. During her senior season, Fossen averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds per game.
 
Personal: Intends to major in communication disorders with aspirations of becoming a speech pathologist. Daughter of Kari and Pat Fossen and her sister, Morgan Fossen, is a pole vaulter on the EWU track and field team.

Tarryn Hart is a Washington product that spent two seasons at Yakima Valley Community College before coming to Cheney. She hails from Wapato, Wash., where she attended Wapato High School.
 
At Yakima Valley, Hart averaged 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game as a sophomore. She helped YVCC finish fourth in the NWAC East Standings with an 11-5 record, clinching a playoff spot, and finishing 21-8 overall.
 
At the high school level, she earned four letters in basketball and one in track and field. She earned a CWAC All-League honorable mention nod as a senior and was named to the 2A All-Tournament First team as a junior. In 2016, she earned honorable mention All-State honors from the Associated Press. She was named First Team All-CWAC as a sophomore after earning an honorable mention nod as a freshman.
 
She led the Wapato Wolves to a 2017 CWAC league and district championships as the team went on to finish fourth in state.
 
Personal: Daughter of Traci Storm and Germaine Hart. Intends on majoring in education.

Kallie Schaplow is another Washington product from Toledo, Wash., where she recently graduated from Toledo High School. Schaplow is a standout javelin thrower and will compete on the EWU track and field team as well.
 
At Toledo, she earned four letters both in basketball and track and field. She also earned two in cross country and one in soccer.
 
Schaplow earned plenty of accolades during her time at Toledo, including being named to the Central 2B Conference First Team in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and was named the league's MVP as a senior. Schaplow also earned All-Area Basketball MVP honors from the Centralia Chronicle and was named to their All-Area Basketball Team in 2019 and 2020, along with being named to the Longview Daily News First Team.
 
She was named First Team All-State by the Associated Press during her final season with the Indians, and also landed on the WIGBCA All-State that year. As a senior, she was named to the Second Team All-State Tournament team and Scorebook Live named her first-team All-State. She participated in the All-State East/West game in 2018 and 2019.
 
Schaplow averaged 17 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block per game as a senior. She scored 1,417 points at Toledo over four seasons.
 
On the track, she was the 2019 2B State and District champion in the javelin and owns a personal best of 136-9. She earned a WIAA Sportsmanship Medallion in both track and basketball while at Toledo, served as a team captain and was an honor society president in 2019 and 2020, earning Central 2B honors for three-straight years.
 
Personal: Intends on majoring in education with plans to become a high school teacher and coach. Her dad, Don Schaplow, is an Eastern Washington graduate, and her brother Duke also attends EWU.
 
#3 | Britt Van Buren | F | 6-0 | Jr. | Santa Paula, Calif. | St. Bonaventure HS / Whitman College / Moorpark College
 
Britt Van Buren is the lone California product in this year's signing class. She comes from Santa Paula, Calif., where she prepped at St. Bonaventure High School. After high school, Van Buren played one season at Whitman College and one at Moorpark College, joining the Eagles as a junior.
 
At Moorpark College, she earned several accolades including First Team All-Western State in 2019-20 and named Third Team All-State. She was named the MVP of the East Los Angeles Community College Tournament and made the Riverside Community College Classic All-Tournament team. Her team also won both of the tournaments she was honored in, and earned the No. 1 seed in the CCCAA State Tournament. Her sophomore season saw her average 15.8 points, 11.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 50.7 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from three-point range and 72 percent from the charity stripe.
 
At St. Bonaventure, Van Buren earned four varsity letters in both basketball and volleyball and three in track and field. She earned MVP from her league, was a three-time First Team All-League member, two-time Second Team All-County and earned First Team All-County honors as a senior. Van Buren also earned First Team CIF Southern Section honors in 2017 and made the first team in 2018. Additionally, she broke the St. Bonaventure single-game rebounding record, grabbing 27 boards. St. Bonaventure also won the 2018 Tri-Valley championship.  
 
Personal: Plans on majoring in kinesiology with aspirations of becoming a physical therapist in the neuro-boxing field. Daughter of Amanda Gonzales and Leodes Van Buren.

November Newcomers: Senior Year Updates
 
#25 | Aaliyah Alexander | G | 5-8 | Fr. | Federal Way, Wash. | Todd Beamer HS
 
Aaliyah Alexander became the first player ever in Todd Beamer's history to score over 1,000 career points and she earned her second-consecutive North Puget Sound League Olympic Division MVP honor.
 
After guiding the Titans to a sixth-place finish at the 4A State Championships, she was named First Team All-Tournament. The Seattle Times, Associated Press and Scorebook Live named her first team All-State while the Tacoma News Tribune placed her on the second.
 
#15 | Maisie Burnham | W | 6-0 | Fr. | Spangle, Wash. | Liberty HS
 
Maisie Burnham led Liberty High School to a WIAA 2B State Tournament Championship. She was named the 2B State All-Tournament MVP and was the AP 2B Player of the Year. Burnham also earned Scorebook Live's 2B Player of the Year honor. She earned a spot on the Tacoma New Tribune's Second Team All-State squad and was a McDonald's All-American nominee.
 
She scored over 2,000 points during her high school career.

During her senior season, Bella Pedrojetti was named the Southwest Conference Co-Player of the Year after averaging 13.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range. She was named to the Oregon Live 6A Girls Second Team and finished her career with 1,353 points which is fifth on her school's all-time scoring list. She also made the all-tournament team at three different tournaments as a senior and made four-straight SWC All-Conference teams.
 
Pedrojetti was South Medford's lone senior. She broke her nose midseason and had to get surgery, missing only one game. She had helped her team advance to the 6A State Semifinals before the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pedrojetti scored a season-high 30 points and followed with another 28-point effort in her first game back from surgery where she made eight out of 12 three-point attempts.
